I don't even qualify as a fence straddler on this one.
The notion of changing one's own name seems foreign to me. It isn't.
My own Pappy ended up with a different name than his birth name.

With Biden out of the race I think Trump and the GOP realize they made a mistake choosing Vance.
You're not alone. I must be supremely if sublimely ignorant to not know why. I couldn't hazard a guess.
Alternatively, anyone that doesn't know "Hang Mike Pence" renders considering being Trump's VP at mortal risk is both profoundly ignorant, and profoundly unfit for the office.
None the less, Trump needed a warm body, and dug one up. And VP's are not as easy to dump as wives.
