The war in Iran (or whose war is it anyways?)

There seems to be some disagreement

What I have read is that not only has the US bribed Iranian protest provocateurs, but that the US also paid snipers to shoot at both sides of the protests.
Over 250 police were also killed.

I hope Russia is going to defend Iran.
Since the US not only has nukes, but used them in Japan and gave nuke to a belligerent like Israel, then the US is the last person who should complain about anyone else having nukes.
Its not just hypocrisy, but against all legal principles.
You either have to have equality, or the US is trying to create a world wide dictatorship.

That's one scenario.
It's not the only possible scenario.
It may not be the best scenario for the good People of Iran.
It may not be the best for humanity.

BUT !

Uncle Sam's hands are not clean here.
I don't know if this is the earliest, but among the U.S.' earliest examples of shameful foreign sovereignty excess was the disgraceful CIA-assisted overthrow of Iran's duly elected Mossadegh.
And here it is a new millennium. And the U.S. is still at it, ham-handedly choosing which Iranian leaders are allowed to survive.

Trump's repeated excuse about not allowing Iran to have a nuclear weapon is twaddle.
Obama already accomplished that.

IF Trump had something better, the correct protocol would be to implement Trump's superior replacement,
thereby superseding Obama's, Britain, France, Germany, China, Russia, & Iran's JCPOA.

Trump's priority was obviously to insult Obama first, and attend to global nuclear security second. "Mission Accomplished"

A Gold Star husband just had to tell the Vice President of the United States about the warnings and failures surrounding the attack that killed his wife.

JD Vance’s response:

“This literally is the first time I’ve heard of this.”

Sit with that for a second.

Joey Amor’s wife, Master Sgt. Nicole Amor, was one of six American soldiers killed on March 1 when an Iranian drone struck their position at Port Shuaiba in Kuwait.

She had served more than 20 years.

She was supposed to come home two days later.

Last night, Joey finally got to ask the Vice President of the United States a question directly.

He told Vance that while the Iranian drone killed his wife, there had also been “a lot of mistakes and a lot of fundamental failures” leading up to that attack.

Then he asked how the administration was going to hold the people responsible accountable.

Vance said:

“This literally is the first time I’ve heard of this.”

He added that sometimes information doesn’t “filter up” to him.

But then, in the same answer, Vance acknowledged something remarkable:

“There were issues with where troops were located that we realized was a huge mistake.”

A huge mistake.

Now let me tell you what soldiers who were actually there have been saying for months.

The Associated Press interviewed 13 soldiers, many of them officers.

They said commanders had been warned that Port Shuaiba was vulnerable to drone attack.
Officers proposed moving the logistics operation to safer locations farther from Iran.
Those plans were rejected.
The port did not have adequate defenses against the kind of low-flying drones Iran was using.
Days before the move, intelligence officers again warned senior commanders about the danger.
The move went ahead anyway.
Then, the night before the deadly attack, soldiers reported drones hovering over the port.
The next morning, Capt. Cody Khork, the officer responsible for safety, was worried enough that he reportedly argued that troops should remain in their bunkers.
About 20 minutes after the final all-clear was given, an Iranian drone crashed through the roof of their operations center.
Six Americans died.
Dozens were wounded.
...}

What seems foolish to me is attacking the political leader of Iran.
That violates the precedent of not trying to assassinate political leaders.
You would think Trump would have understood that makes him now a valid and likely target.
And there really is no defense.
Any shipping container near DC could suddenly open up and launch an explosive drone.

I would love to know what those "classified leaks" were?
But I doubt they are going to follow the FOIA and release everything eventually.

Indeed.
But I'd settle for simply agreeing to, committing to the termination of one job, terminating which ever government employee is the worse crook, Secretary Hegseth, or General Sylvia.

What if the leaks were actually about the US activities that caused the war in the Ukraine, like Hunter Biden delivering bribes, or if Netanyahu had actually ordered the strike on the Ayatollah?

a) Let the chips fall where they may.
b) I confess my strong bias. I spent years in the mid-1970's at a major U.S. military HQ, with the privilege to rub elbows with senior U.S. military commanders, up to commanding generals.
Even in half-century retrospect the professionalism of these men & women impress me as world-class. We owe them a debt we cannot repay.

I don't know what Secretary Hegseth's real reason is. The fish stinks from the head.

At least I hope so?

US sends third aircraft carrier to Middle East amid stalemate in Iran war

Deployment underscores evolving complexity of Trump’s war against Iran as US midterm elections loom
Associated Press Thu 1 Oct 2026 21.17 EDT
The US military is dispatching a third aircraft carrier strike group to the Middle East, as President Donald Trump warned new strikes against Iran could be on the horizon.
The deployment, which includes a specialist amphibious attack group, underscores the rapidly evolving dynamic of Trump’s war against Iran as midterm elections in the US loom large.
Trump has threatened that a post-midterm election escalation remains a viable option – despite his initial promises that the war would last a matter of weeks.

Pentagon plans for death of Trump’s record military budget

Mark Satter, Paul McLeary and Audrey Decker Thu, October 29, 2026 at 3:34 PM GMT-5
The Pentagon is quietly preparing for a $400 billion cut to President Donald Trump's military budget, as officials realize the president's record-breaking request is effectively dead.
The administration has pushed Congress for a supersized $1.5 trillion investment in the military — the largest in history. The money would overhaul weapons stockpiles and realize Trump's dreams for everything from a sprawling missile shield to a fleet of nuclear-powered battleships.
But the Pentagon and congressional spending committees are drafting a smaller $1.1 trillion defense budget, according to a defense industry official, two former officials and one other person familiar with the matter. The planning — which runs contrary to what administration officials are saying publicly — is a clear indication of the political headwinds facing Republicans after the midterm elections.

Cross posted from the Quotable Quotes thread

"Some of us have been briefed on the war plan... I will just say this: their plan is insane. It will lead to devastating escalation and the likely destruction of our commitment to the rule of law."

~ Sen. Chris Murphy S2 #479
?
a) congress.gov has no listing for "Chris Murphy". https://www.congress.gov/search?q={"source":"members","search":"chris+murphy"}
b) It appears the Chris Murphy referred to #479 is Chris Murphy [D-CT] https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chris_Murphy
c) Not to be confused with Christopher John Murphy (May 31, 1968 – July 22, 2026) was an American politician ... South Carolina House of Representatives from the 98th District https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chris_Murphy_(South_Carolina_politician)

Bottom line, the quotation is attributed to a Democrat. This message may be more persuasive when bipartisan. BUT !
Evidently Republicans care more about their own meager political fortunes than they do about the lives, the welfare of our all volunteer U.S. military service members.
