"... trans awareness ..." #467
This comment #468 might seem antagonistic to the cause.
Even if so, not maliciously so.
A century or two ago gender non-conformers didn't have access to the surgical & bio-chemical options available today.
So what did they do?
It might be encouraging to think they got on with their lives with "authentic expression", unperturbed by the sloshing tides of narrow-minded conventions.
If the one in ten quantification in #467 is approximately true, it's likely some portion of that sub-group did, or at least endeavored to.
So what's the issue?
Social acceptance?
"... trans awareness ..." #467
An appeal to conscience to the nine in ten?
Difficult to address an issue without calling attention to it. But though publicizing a social issue may be essential to addressing it, publicity, awareness is insufficient on its own.
The PSA on automotive seat-belts isn't only -
seat-belts, seat-belts, seat-belts - !
The message also includes follow-through: BUCKLE UP !
Bottom line, what are gender-conformers supposed to be aware of this week? What are we supposed to do?
ps:
People are people. splendid
But is it necessary for the full spectrum of non-conformers whether by gender identity, or sexual preference to make confrontational issue of their personal issue even before introduction? Even to strangers with whom there will be no enduring relationship? Like strangers at an airport?
"Your right to flail your fist ends short of where my nose begins." Those wishing to non-conform are welcome. At what point does the preference to non-conform cross the line into intrusion upon those that neither pass [condemnatory] judgement, nor wish to have such personal details inflicted on them by strangers?
This is NOT a dismissal of human dignity in all diversity. Instead, during "trans awareness week" it's a reminder, fellow citizens regardless of gender status, may benefit from respecting the gender rights of those from whom they seek it.
HAPPY TRANS AWARENESS WEEK
