What to call this thread?

James Earl Carter [D-GA] was an impressive man, even if also an inferior president.
Meme #1,821 makes an important point. Claiming to be Christian relates to living by Christ's teachings.
Thank you J.C. And
Thank you J.C.

Levit, what if they're married? Doesn't the Holy Bible say a spouse must be dutiful to the husband?

Men that have had vasectomy can't attend church?
"He that is wounded in the stones, or hath his privy member cut off, shall not enter into the congregation of the Lord." Deuteronomy 23:1

Or wear a Cotton / poly shirt?
"thou shalt not sow thy field with mingled seed: neither shall a garment mingled of linen and woolen come upon thee" Leviticus 19:19

As it is for nations, so it is for persons. We can be at War. Or we can be at peace.
How do YOU wish to live?

* "Dear Dr. Laura,

Thank you so much for trying to educate people regarding god's law. I have learned a great deal from you, and I try to share that knowledge with as many people as I can.

When someone tries to defend the homosexual lifestyle for example, I simply remind him that Leviticus 18:12 clearly states it to be an abomination. End of debate.

But I need some advice from you, regarding some of the other specific laws and how best to follow them.

When I burn a bull on the altar as a sacrifice, I know it creates a pleasing odor for the lord (Leviticus 1:9), the problem is my neighbors. They claim the odor is not pleasing to them. How should Ideal with this?

I would like to sell my daughter into slavery as suggested by Exodus 21:7. What do you think a fair price would be? I know I am allowed no contact with a woman while she is in her period of menstrual uncleanliness (Leviticus 19:24). The problem is, how do I tell? I have tried asking. But some women take offense.
I have a neighbor who insists on working on the Sabbath. Exodus 35:2 clearly states he should be put to death. Am I obliged morally to kill him myself, or may I hire a hit-man?

I know you have studied these things extensively, and so I am confident you can help.

Thank you again for reminding us that god's word is eternal, & unchanging."

* This Dear Dr. Laura letter has been rattling around the Internet for decades. It seems to satisfy the fundamental criteria of satire.
There is much wisdom in the Holy Bible. And there are also reminders of its ancient origins, from a simpler world.

Re #1,822

If that passage from Leviticus is still valid and binding what about the other laws laid down there? After all, Leviticus alone bans some 76 things calling many of them abominations so the obvious question is why should that verse be binding if the rest of them are not?

Amen brother !

afterthought:
There's a somewhat contemptuous term, "cafeteria Catholic", sometimes used accusingly against those that attend Catholic church regularly, BUT also employ artificial birth control, to have recreational sex. The pope says no !
Not to endorse the term, but to acknowledge the point sharply made in #1,823.
Adhering only selectively to Biblical wisdom, simultaneously rejecting or avoiding those teachings that conflict with a personal agenda, the First Amendment allows that, within bounds of law. BUT !
Those that advocate "an eye for an eye" misinterpret the lesson. Complete that passage to find "turn the other cheek", a message many choose not to follow. BUT !!

Gandhi did, and expelled the British from India without firing a shot.
Dr. Martin Luther King did. And marching across the Alabama's Edmund Pettus Bridge they were met by armed government thugs that clubbed them mercilessly, leaving some like Rep. John Lewis with permanent neurological injury. BUT !
Dr. King helped make more progress promoting civil rights in his brief lifetime than had occurred in several centuries that preceded him.

It's an old story, the divine imprimatur.
Beware manipulative poseurs !

I've never heard that - Cafeteria Christianity and Cafeteria Christian are the versions I've heard (and use) and I'd apply them to Evangelicals more than Catholics.

Two members of Congress just signed their names to an official letter flown across the Atlantic to Dublin, demanding that Irish dance officials bar a single transgender girl from competing in Orlando.

Florida Republicans Randy Fine and Greg Steube sent the June 24 letter to the Dublin-based governing body for Irish dance and its North American teachers' association, ahead of the North American Irish Dance Championships running July 2-7.

"Biological males do not belong in girls' dance," (And bigots don't belong in Congress - Shift's comment) Fine wrote. This is the same Randy Fine who, back in 2023, said "damn right" when challenged over a bill critics warned would help erase the LGBTQ+ community.

Then it escalated. Florida Attorney General James Uthmeier threatened legal action of his own, telling the organizations that advertising a women's competition while allowing a transgender girl to dance in it could count as a deceptive trade practice.

In other words, the state's top lawyer is treating a child's dance contest as a case of false advertising. He wanted written confirmation by Tuesday that she would be kept out.

There are only two possible responses:

(1) cancel the event entirely but make it very clear why they are doing so (the Florida Attorney general can't stop thinking about what's in children's pants)
(2) ignore this and go ahead anyways.

The Netherlands has taken a major step forward for LGBTQ+ rights.

The Dutch Parliament has passed new legislation criminalising conversion therapy, approving the measure with 57 out of 75 votes in favour.

The new law targets intrusive practices that attempt to change or suppress a person's sexual orientation or gender identity. Under the legislation, those found performing conversion therapy can face up to two years in prison and fines of up to €27,500.

For many LGBTQ+ advocates, the vote represents years of campaigning and a growing recognition that conversion therapy can cause lasting psychological and emotional harm.

Supporters argue that LGBTQ+ people do not need to be "fixed" or changed. They deserve acceptance, dignity, and the freedom to live authentically.

The Netherlands now joins a growing number of European countries that have introduced national bans or criminal penalties for conversion therapy, reflecting a wider movement across Europe to strengthen protections for LGBTQ+ communities.

For many people, this decision is about more than legal reform.

It's about sending a clear message that LGBTQ+ identities deserve respect rather than coercion.

And that's why so many are celebrating this historic vote today.

A pastor who publicly campaigned against LGBTQ+ books and Pride flags, claiming they harmed children, has been sentenced to 15 years in prison for unlawful sexual conduct with a 14-year-old girl.

Silas Shelton of Ohio spoke at a school board meeting opposing the sale of Heartstopper, a book featuring Gay characters, at a school book fair. During sentencing, the judge said Shelton showed “no remorse” and imposed the maximum 15-year prison sentence.

The people trying to ban LGBTQ+ books claimed they were protecting children. The man leading that campaign was the one who posed the danger.

Illinois Governor JB Pritzker signed three transgender rights bills into law on Sunday before joining the Chicago Pride Parade later that day.

The new laws streamline the process for updating gender markers on state IDs, require insurers to cover up to six months of hormone therapy prescriptions, and remove testosterone from Illinois' prescription monitoring database while prohibiting the addition of estrogen, mifepristone, and misoprostol.

Following the bill signing, Pritzker wrote on X:

"Today, I'm proud to sign landmark legislation expanding on my administration's work to make Illinois a safe, empowering, and inclusive place for the LGBTQ+ community. With my signature, we are a few steps closer to a state where all can live their lives without fear of hate."

The legislation has been welcomed by LGBTQ+ advocates as a significant step in expanding protections and access to gender-affirming care in Illinois.
