What to call this thread?

James Earl Carter [D-GA] was an impressive man, even if also an inferior president.
Meme #1,821 makes an important point. Claiming to be Christian relates to living by Christ's teachings.
Thank you J.C. And
Thank you J.C.

Read full chapter / Leviticus 20:13 in all English translations

Levit, what if they're married? Doesn't the Holy Bible say a spouse must be dutiful to the husband?

Men that have had vasectomy can't attend church?
"He that is wounded in the stones, or hath his privy member cut off, shall not enter into the congregation of the Lord." Deuteronomy 23:1

Or wear a Cotton / poly shirt?
"thou shalt not sow thy field with mingled seed: neither shall a garment mingled of linen and woolen come upon thee" Leviticus 19:19

As it is for nations, so it is for persons. We can be at War. Or we can be at peace.
How do YOU wish to live?

* "Dear Dr. Laura,

Thank you so much for trying to educate people regarding god's law. I have learned a great deal from you, and I try to share that knowledge with as many people as I can.

When someone tries to defend the homosexual lifestyle for example, I simply remind him that Leviticus 18:12 clearly states it to be an abomination. End of debate.

But I need some advice from you, regarding some of the other specific laws and how best to follow them.

When I burn a bull on the altar as a sacrifice, I know it creates a pleasing odor for the lord (Leviticus 1:9), the problem is my neighbors. They claim the odor is not pleasing to them. How should Ideal with this?

I would like to sell my daughter into slavery as suggested by Exodus 21:7. What do you think a fair price would be? I know I am allowed no contact with a woman while she is in her period of menstrual uncleanliness (Leviticus 19:24). The problem is, how do I tell? I have tried asking. But some women take offense.
I have a neighbor who insists on working on the Sabbath. Exodus 35:2 clearly states he should be put to death. Am I obliged morally to kill him myself, or may I hire a hit-man?

I know you have studied these things extensively, and so I am confident you can help.

Thank you again for reminding us that god's word is eternal, & unchanging."

* This Dear Dr. Laura letter has been rattling around the Internet for decades. It seems to satisfy the fundamental criteria of satire.
There is much wisdom in the Holy Bible. And there are also reminders of its ancient origins, from a simpler world.

Re #1,822

If that passage from Leviticus is still valid and binding what about the other laws laid down there? After all, Leviticus alone bans some 76 things calling many of them abominations so the obvious question is why should that verse be binding if the rest of them are not?

Amen brother !

afterthought:
There's a somewhat contemptuous term, "cafeteria Catholic", sometimes used accusingly against those that attend Catholic church regularly, BUT also employ artificial birth control, to have recreational sex. The pope says no !
Not to endorse the term, but to acknowledge the point sharply made in #1,823.
Adhering only selectively to Biblical wisdom, simultaneously rejecting or avoiding those teachings that conflict with a personal agenda, the First Amendment allows that, within bounds of law. BUT !
Those that advocate "an eye for an eye" misinterpret the lesson. Complete that passage to find "turn the other cheek", a message many choose not to follow. BUT !!

Gandhi did, and expelled the British from India without firing a shot.
Dr. Martin Luther King did. And marching across the Alabama's Edmund Pettus Bridge they were met by armed government thugs that clubbed them mercilessly, leaving some like Rep. John Lewis with permanent neurological injury. BUT !
Dr. King helped make more progress promoting civil rights in his brief lifetime than had occurred in several centuries that preceded him.

It's an old story, the divine imprimatur.
Beware manipulative poseurs !

I've never heard that - Cafeteria Christianity and Cafeteria Christian are the versions I've heard (and use) and I'd apply them to Evangelicals more than Catholics.
