"support" hayden #1,065
Out of the context of the fluidity of child-rearing this may seem obvious.
As a single point issue, "support your kid" may seem uncontroversial.

Real life over a period of decades is more complicated.
While discussing child-proofing a home Craig Ferguson characterized toddlers as "miniature drunks".
Raising children from moist newborns to voting adults may involve dozens, hundreds of parental guidance lessons.
These may tend toward avoidance:
- don't lick your finger and stick it in that electrical socket
- don't pet that hungry wolf
- don't play with matches under the covers

This negative messaging isn't because parents are intrinsically horrid.
We may think of being gay as a binary: straight or gay. Life is a little more complicated.
Some individuals may have a less dominating libido than others. Straight, gay, or non?
Where does "bi-" fit in this spectrum?

Some parents may vehemently preach against any deviation from hetero-norms for the most shallow and bigoted reasons.
Others may simply wish to spare their children the added adversity of clashing with societal norms.

This isn't intended to justify inadequate parenting.
But it may help us understand.
Hanlon's Razor - Don't attribute to malice what simple incompetence will explain.

Do infants enjoy infancy as much as adults enjoy adultery?

Raising children from moist newborns to voting adults may involve dozens, hundreds of parental guidance lessons.
To quote the mother of a friend: If you raise your kids and they make it to adulthood without them ending up (i) in jail, (ii) on drugs, or (iii) dead, you've done a pretty good job.

"in jail" S2
MLK & prestigious others had an arrest record. I do not.
In some ways I could be proud of that. In other ways not.

- jail: Americans more esteemed than me have been there
- drugs: every U.S. president in the new millennium has tried drugs, some prescribed, some not
- dead: ever meet, or hear of a living martyr?

Emerson visited Thoreau in jail and asked, “Henry, what are you doing in there?”

Thoreau replied, “Waldo, the question is what are you doing out there.”

How an Oklahoma student's gender essay became a national culture war fight

Conservative activists and politicians have rallied around a college student who received a zero on an essay. Some grad students said they’re worried about what happens next.

The student, Samantha Fulnecky, a junior on a pre-med track, recently got a 0 on her essay that leaned on her Christian beliefs for an assignment on gender stereotypes in her psychology class. The instructor told her in a Nov. 16 message that her essay was offensive and lacked evidence. Fulnecky said she felt like she’d been penalized for her religious views.
“Taxpayers are paying into this institution,” he said in an interview. “They need to know exactly what’s going on. We need to be bringing more of these issues to the surface and not allowing college education bureaucracy to sweep this nonsense under the rug.”

The nut doesn't fall far from the tree?

There's a grey cloud in every Silver lining.
This Fulnecky has at least detailed the contours of this category of bigotry.
It's easier to battle the dragon when we know what she looks like.

Here are some replies to the comments I have been getting on my Facebook posts from people who are uneducated about gender biology and sex

Recently I have received a wave of comments from people who believe they understand gender and biology yet speak with confidence that comes from slogans not science. They write things like:

Science does not explain it. Sexual kinks explain it.

Men can never become women and women can never become men. Gender science is fake.

Being trans is a mental illness and there are only two sexes end of story.

They say these things like they are facts and expect silence in return. So here is silence broken. Here is what the science really says. Here is the truth without fear.

The idea that being transgender is a fetish or a kink is simply wrong. That is not my opinion. That is the position of the World Health Organization the American Medical Association the British NHS and the Endocrine Society. The WHO removed gender identity from the category of mental disorders because it is not an illness. It is a natural variation in the human population. The NHS states clearly that gender dysphoria is ....

Perhaps the one making this assertion would benefit from knowing:
Some male cuttlefish have reportedly been seen in nature pretending to be female, to beat larger male suitors pursuing a breeding female.

"But trans people aren't pretending." S2 #1,075
... and cuttlefish aren't humans. BUT !

It's further refutation of the bigoted notion that:
" ... there are only two sexes end of story." #1,073
Conclusion: it's not true within the human race, and it's not true beyond the human race.

"Rob Reiner ... giving queer people and their families dignity." #1,076
This comment is not in any way intended as a diminution of Reiner's contributions.
Instead it's a broader more fundamental point offered us by Art Schopenhauer:
"Honor has not to be won; it must only not be lost." Arthur Schopenhauer(1788-1860), German philosopher
Thanks Arty.

With that insight we see Reiner wasn't "giving queer people and their families dignity", for that implies they didn't have dignity before Reiner imparted it to them.
Instead Reiner thwarted the usurpation of the dignity this assailed minority was born with.
