Sexual orientation, like gender identity, is innate - that is "those people" are born that way.
As you know Bill Maher is a compulsive satirist.
One possible explanation for the #1,102 Maher quotation is Maher is wrong. But,
I suspect Maher may deliberately have been making an obtuse jab at the shallow male ego, the aspect of the male personality that concludes, if she's not clamoring to be with me, it's not a deficiency in me, instead, she's a lesbian.

Secretary Buttigieg and his husband have a child. Homosexuality may be unusual, ~10% of the population?
How unusual is wanting no children? AND
Is there a correlation?
Or, as I suspect, about the same % of population, but unrelated to hetero / homo-sexuality?
Its not "cart before horse" but instead is where all things possible get tried, and only then does the more successful become apparent.
If there is no opportunity for new things, then nothing can improve and there is no evolution at all.
I don't remember any sexual orientation until after puberty myself.

While kids may play at role models, like playing house, I do not believe they have any particular orientation until puberty.

Children self-identify by gender at a very young age. As early as two or three long before the onset of puberty.
Think back - when did you know you were a boy? Not decide but know. I'm sure it was long before puberty.
When I think back, I remember girls as being larger, stronger, and more in leadership roles until near puberty at 11 or 12.

That doesn't answer my question - when did you KNOW you were a boy?
That has no meaning, since we were taught things like pink vs blue, but it was meaningless until puberty.
You are you, not a label like boy or girl, until puberty.
Until puberty, there was no significance to being called a boy or a girl.
Segregated public toilets send an unmistakable message to the children that observe them.
Studies have observed / verified young children commonly demonstrate their sex distinction.
When left alone in a room full of toys young boys are inclined to play with the toy trucks,
young girls more inclined to play with dolls.
They may not be human reproductive factories at that age, but it suggests they're more than merely pre-adult blank slates.
I remember kindergarten quite well, and the kids normally all played with the same toys until the teachers told them which toys they were "supposed" to play with.
And actually the most popular game was to "play house", where kids would role play their parents.

The study is blaming hormones, not gender.
So if the hormones are contrary to the birth gender, then the person is going to exhibit contrary behavior to their birth gender.
And again that is common, not only from illnesses, but herbicide and pesticide hormones in the food chain.

To start with, you're confusing sex and gender. The two are not the same.
People use the terms interchangeably in common speech but the medical and scientific communities differentiate between the two. And they don’t always agree.
Male and female brains are physically different. They are composed of different types of cells and they think with different parts of the brain. That’s one of the reasons that certain types of head injuries affect men and women differently.
