There was a similar semantic struggle generations ago, between Mrs. & Miss. as a title for young women.
The semantic solution seems simple enough in retrospect: " Ms. "

Rather than continuing to whine about it in 3 part harmony, why not offer a solution?

Instead of Mr. or Ms., why not Mm? Make sense Mm Labelle?

When I see Mm Labelle I immediately think of Mademoiselle (in part because her last name sounds French) abbreviated Mlle or Dlle, traditionally given to an unmarried woman.

BTW, Ms Labelle and her husband have finally received approval to begin in vitro fertilization.
