Superficially paradoxical perhaps, but "MAD", mutually assured destruction does not work UNLESS !!

Unless each nuclear armed nation's arsenal is under the control of leadership that wishes to survive (antithetical to the namesake "MAD").

But doomsday cults are quite familiar to Western civilization *.

Some experts scale human history in millions of years.
Difficult to imagine humanity surviving a few more centuries, if MAD, a dynamic which does not succeed without leadership determination to survive,
if MAD is allowed to continue without Plan-B safeguard.

In the case of many of Trump's assertions the truth of what Trump may claim may matter.

In this case, no.
Whether Trump won the 2020 election is immaterial. IF Trump ASSERTS that he won the 2020 election, after claiming he also won in 2016,
then even if Trump won again in 2024 that ostensible election victory would for reason of Constitutional enumeration be null and void.

But the reality is that MAD retaliatory effect has been vastly more successful than the alternative of an arbitrary government dictatorship over nuclear weapons.
The facts are the US had no legal or moral justification for the nuclear experiments on civilians of Nagasaki or Hiroshima.
Since not having a MAD nuclear retaliation then totally failed, that then leaves MAD as the only possibility left to the world.

As for doomsday cults, that is not common or normal, since it requires people supporting suicidal leaders.
That did happen with Jonestown, but that was because of Jim Jones already dying from some medical problem.

What you are (deliberately?) overlooking is the "low probability / high consequence" calculation.
You cite it as a success, so far.

Who disputes that?
The point is, there's a subset of the population that is homicidal, and a subset of the population which is genocidal.

It's merely a matter of time before one of them acquires the ability to terminate the human race.
It needn't be a POTUS.

Tossing a stone into a crowd to spark a brawl is a long-tenured scenario.
It's not impossible to imagine a variety of malefactors staging a provocation which appears to be the beginning of nuclear war.
The nuclear dominoes predictably fall from there. Prosperous nations being converted into smoldering craters based on a false flag doomsday ruse.

We're less likely to succumb to self-extinction if we eliminate the means to it.

Regardless of nuclear weapons being a risk, the facts are that without MAD has absolutely proven to be the worst possible failure.
It is totally guaranteed that without MAD, then nuclear weapons will definitely be used, as they already have been.
MAD is the only possible solution left, regardless of how risky that may be.

There is no question in my mind that if not for MAD, we would have nuked Russia, China, Vietnam, Cuba, Iran, Iraq, Afghanistan, etc.
The fact we now can assassinate with only hundreds of collateral damage deaths, shows we still are not governed by the Rule of Law.

I guess the big questions with all this money spent on ICE troops and detention centers, is if Trump is going to allow any more elections at all?
Although at his age one would think they would have other priorities?
