Florida classroom bookshelves left empty as education reform law goes into effect

"I don't want my kids reading books that make them feel bad about being big and bad." #160
Purity has simple appeal.
But the U.S. / West is less laissez-faire than we may wish to acknowledge. Book-banning / literary restrictions the obvious example here.

We don't want triple X pornography in our public school libraries. So Democrat's preference in restrictions are OK, but Republican's not?

What is the objective standard? How do we get both parties to embrace & apply it?

"We must fight the woke in government agencies. We can never, ever surrender to woke ideology." Florida Governor DeSantis
If you are that emphatic Governor, it must be a formidable danger. What precisely is this "woke ideology" you warn us of?

woke (wōk)
adj. wok·er, wok·est
Slang
Aware of the injustice of the social system in which one lives: “The phenomenon of being woke is a cultural push to challenge problematic norms, systemic injustices and the overall status quo through complete awareness” (Raven Cras).
[African American Vernacular English, past participle of wake, to wake; see WAKE1.]

You are a disgrace Governor.
Better to keep your mouth closed and be thought a fool than to open it and remove all doubt.
- inspired by Proverbs 17:28
Too late Ronny. The truth is out.

Why ‘wokeness’ has become the latest battlefront for white conservatives in America #164

Florida Governor Ron DeSantis warned Fox News viewers “the woke mind virus is basically a form of cultural Marxism.”
Marx·ism (märksĭz′əm)
n.
The political and economic philosophy of Karl Marx and Friedrich Engels in which the concept of class struggle plays a central role in understanding society's allegedly inevitable development from bourgeois oppression under capitalism to a socialist and ultimately classless society.

In your false Marxism analogy governor, you present yourself as representative of the proletariat?

DeSantis' groundless accusations bear recognizable characteristics of propaganda. He's demonizing constructive awareness. Doesn't that usefully define Governor DeSantis' [R-FL] political ideology? An advocate for being uninformed?

Florida Introduces 10 New Laws for 2025

Story by Ewan Palmer

A new year brings new laws, and several are set to take effect in Florida on January 1, 2025.

At least 10 new laws will be introduced in the Sunshine State at the start of the year, including measures to restrict social media use for children, protect first responders on duty, and reform the management of ...

CONTINUED

==========================================

The social media restrictions are likely in violation of the First Amendment (and definitely run afoul of the GOP insistence that parents should make the decisions) but the interesting one relates to First Responders - no idea if First Responders are subject to a lot of harassment/danger or if this is really intended to stop the public from seeing what the police et al are doing (remember George Floyd's murder was originally reported as someone suffering a medical event and, if it hadn't been for someone filming what happened it would have been completely swept under the carpet)

Once warned, individuals must not approach within 25 feet of a first responder performing their duties.

Florida Introduces 10 New Laws for 2025

"The social media restrictions are likely in violation of the First Amendment" S2 #168
Could be, particularly if inflicted on adults.
But there are countless examples of "children", those that have not yet reached the age of legal emancipation, being treated as second-class citizens.
They're not allowed to vote, to drink, to buy tobacco, to get a driver's license, etc.

The simple thing for sear to do @CV is to reflexively insult the free speech infringement, and feel good about feeling bad. BUT:
Stats I've read of children's smart-phone usage habits align with preexisting definitions of addiction. And when extended cellphone access is suddenly suspended, symptoms akin to drug withdrawal have been known to occur.
Further, there are indications social media operators deliberately design their formats to hook users, deliberately dominating their attention.

Tossing our children to the wolves in the name of free speech may bear the superficial appearance of a noble cause.
That certainly is NOT an endorsement of whatever statutory jalopy DeSantis' paradise has slapped together.
It's grudging acknowledgement some action may be appropriate to protect children from $Billionaires like Elon Musk.

Not only on target, but right in the center of the small red dot.

Hmmm
Political hypocrisy in the GOP. That's certain to make headlines. right?

"Once warned, individuals must not approach within 25 feet of a first responder performing their duties." #168
Was officer Chauvin "performing" his "duties" when he murdered Floyd?
If that's the restriction then there is no restriction, for if the suspect first responder is committing murder, that's not "performing their duties", and thus the 25 feet exclusion standard does not apply. right? We'll have to review the statutory language to resolve that issue.

Many such cameras used for this purpose may be cellphone cameras, suited to selfies literally at arm's length. A 25 foot exclusion zone would tend to minimize the utility of whatever image was captured. How "convenient" for the government employees colluding with these homicidal public "servants" (executioners).

Thanks to S2 #170 we can see the misery self-sufficiency inflicts on children by observing their facial expressions.

... not sure what we're missing here S2. Somethings worthwhile I suspect.

"what are you watching?" "some guy killing cats" #172
This approaches "hatchet in the forehead" level alarm.

CERTAINLY we should protect children from what is age-inappropriate.

What #172 illustrates, it opens the Pandora's box of censorship. It is in fact censorship, however benevolently, wholesomely well-intended.
But is there a better option?

Happy 85th birthday to Judy Blume, the beloved author of many trailblazing novels for children and teens and a long-time champion of intellectual freedom! As the author of many Mighty Girl favorites such as "Are You There, God? It's Me, Margaret", "Deenie", and "Tiger Eyes," Blume's influence, especially on tween and teen girls, has been far-reaching for two generations. But what her many young fans rarely realize is that her frank discussion of topics like religion, puberty, and sexuality in these books -- the same honesty that makes them so appealing to young readers -- has made her one of the most frequently challenged children's authors.

Even as a relatively new author, though, instead of bowing to the criticisms, Blume persisted in writing openly and honestly about issues affecting young people -- and speaking up for authors, teachers, librarians, and others who face disapproval, insults, and even the loss of jobs and careers because they refuse to remove books from the hands of young readers. As such, she has become a champion for children's freedom to read -- and authors' freedom to write -- about topics that some find controversial.

In our blog tribute to Judy Blume, we honor her both as an author of many beloved Mighty Girl books and as a determined and forceful voice against censorship and book banning. In a time when books still face frequent challenges from all sides of the political spectrum, her experiences combating censorship -- and her powerful words about the value of making complex and daring books accessible to kids -- are more important than ever.

"It's not just the books under fire now that worry me. It is the books that will never be written." author Judy Blume #174
Yes.
Trump knows what he's doing JB. And he's not only had four years of experience in the office to gain rudimentary understanding of the power potential of the office to such a saboteur as himself.
Trump has also had an additional four years to plot, to scheme, to prepare to execute the destruction of the government he heads.

Unfortunately Ms. Blume, fiction is not only on the Trump administration hit-list. It's also the basis, the ruse upon which they justify their destruction, a big gun in their anti-establishment arsenal.

And today they're banning books instead of burning them (at least so far) so maybe that's progress ....

1739622409846.png

When the Nazis burned Sigmund Freud's books in 1933, he remarked, "What progress we are making. In the Middle Ages, they would have burned me. Now, they are content with burning my books." This statement highlighted the shift from personal persecution to the destruction of intellectual work. Freud's books were among many targeted by the Nazis during their campaign against "un-German" literature, which aimed to suppress dissenting ideas and control cultural expression.
The book burnings were part of a broader effort by the Nazi regime to align German culture with their ideology. On May 10, 1933, university students in 34 German cities burned over 25,000 books deemed subversive, including works by Jewish, communist, and liberal authors. The event was a chilling demonstration of the regime's intent to eradicate intellectual freedom and enforce conformity.

Much of the material they started with was the "immoral and perverse" category, which meant anything written by gay authors or anything gay themed. I think it's important to include that when discussing the Nazi book burnings, considering that is a very big part of what the banning of books in the US started with.

We gain insight into the Trump agenda by observing what they oppose.

At risk of stating the obvious:
one of the most insidious dynamics here, the Trump MAGAs are dismantling our system under the guise of patriotism.

"The only crime that I've committed is to fearlessly defend our nation from those who seek to destroy it." Trump 23/04/09 on FOX Easter Sunday

Trump may not have been convicted of dozens of felonies when this statement was broadcast. He has been now.
Thus if the felonies for which the jury convicted Trump were perpetrated before 23/04/09 this statement is yet one more Trump lie.

Who lies more? Trump, or Putin?
