Yes.
No.

The post-capitalism notion was a script detail which accomplished the following:
- it enabled the televiewer to imagine both a somewhat more utopian world beyond our own monetized experience of the $wage $slave. Why do that? To suggest the episode characters acted as a matter of conviction, principle, rather than servitude, financial obligation.
- That enabled audience members to not be distracted about why the actors costumes didn't have a wallet pocket, etc.

The advent of the automobile, the horseless carriage was protested in part because it would end employment of the buggy-whip manufacturers. They were substantially correct.
What will happen when A.I. / automation / intelligent dexterous robots displace human laborers? Unemployment will exceed 50%? Then $what ?!

I'm a fan of the History Channel series Alone. By watching it I realized what accounts for our prosperity is division of labor, vastly more efficient than each individual attending to their own needs directly, growing their own food, building their own car, etc.
Subsequently I realized division of labor is not practical without $money.
Some may perceive money to be an annoyance, one more thing to have to fuss about. I believe it is an indispensable component of modern society, the linchpin of division of labor.

Even if madness ensues, and citizens receive a survivable stipend from fully automated industry, not clear to me how that could be, without money.
I suspect, when we're rid of money, we're also rid of human society.

It was only half a century ago. How could you forget ?! Something else on your mind?

MeTV [memorable entertainment TV] broadcasts these old TV series. Nostalgia fans may wish to set the DVR ... . Next up?

Star Trek

A Private Little War

Season 2; Episode 19 (1968)
William Shatner (Capt. James T. Kirk), Leonard Nimoy (Mr. Spock), DeForest Kelley (Dr. Leonard McCoy) / Director: Marc Daniels

A power struggle between the Federation and the Klingon Empire ensnares a primitive society Kirk once visited.

I think they were shooting for a pretty abstract human society in Star Trek.
Since they had anti-matter reactions, they were claiming free energy, and with replicators, that energy then could make whatever you wanted.
But I think that was only the Federation, since the Ferengi were not free of money.

They say that's good jeans. Levi's I imagine.

"Since hummingbirds have to migrate, we see lots of them in NM.
We fill the feeders in spring and fall, and I have seen half a dozen feeding at the same time." R5
In upState NY we have hummingbirds.
Neighbors attract them with baskets of flowers with trumpet-shaped blossoms.
Feeders? Fine. BUT !
Some well-meaning birders may imagine natural feed best for hummingbirds.
Experts say no!

Counterintuitive?
Seems so to me.

On my hilltop we have a few hummingbirds. BUT !
We also have some critters I didn't know existed until I saw them here on my own land.

They're Hummingbird Moths. Like Hummingbirds they dine in flight, without landing on / weighing down the blossom.

I'm w/ Bugs on this. Awesome.

The result being a literary / conceptual reciprocity, like a seesaw.
By avoiding mundane detail it concentrates reader / audience attention on what remains. Avoid distraction.
When discussing computers, not "megs", but "giga-quads".
For retail transactions, "credits", not "green-backs".

Back then I had a conversation about this with a Black friend. Not a lot of dark skin among Star Trek characters.
Our brief conversation addressed that, and also in this Sci-Fi fantasy, the species preoccupied with $money.

During that Star Trek era, the broader society, U.S. society sometimes portrayed Jews as being preoccupied with money,
and having big noses, & perhaps being short in stature. Not many Jews in the NBA.

Ferengi, preoccupied with money, short in stature, not big noses, but big ears
were a sci-fi wink & a nod allusion to Jews?

As in S2 #54 the utility of sci-fi societal satire is degraded or lost if the viewer can't relate.

So Ferengi were interstellar Jews, tight-wads?

This is a peril common to satire / social comment.
If too obscure, we can't relate the fiction to reality.
If not obscure enough, we risk offense.
The goldilocks zone between those opposite modes of failure can be quite narrow.

I'm not wild about that, BUT !
As the Holy book teaches, there's always a serpent in Paradise.
Striving for perfection can be a source of improvement.
Expecting to achieve perfection can be a source of disappointment.
Life goes on.

Lots of hummingbirds moths in NM also.
First time I saw one was when I was redoing a 2nd story roof that was so steep I felt the need for a rope.
It was most startling to suddenly having this big thing buzzing around me.
I must have been wearing a colorful shirt?
Once I became familiar with them, I no longer was worried about things like stingers, claws, or beaks.

Interesting that I never made the connection between Ferengi and Judaism.
Seems so obvious now.

My first encounter here, in Y2K, I was up a ladder & distracted by aerial toil when I heard the now familiar buzz jut in, & then vanish,
all beyond my field of view.
It took me a few days to imagine what it was most likely to have been.

My personal opinion, you should consider not doing so a badge of pride.
Seems to me an example of the Star Trek franchise crossing the line. Either way, not Star Trek's finest moment.

If it had been the conceptual linchpin to making a vital, constructive insight about civilization I'd overlook it.
BUT !
In the vast scheme of things, small knishes.
