The Iraq War officially lasted 8 years, 8 months, and 28 days, beginning on March 20, 2003, and concluding on December 18, 2011. While major combat operations were famously declared over just weeks after the invasion, the conflict transitioned into a nearly decade-long occupation and insurgency.
Key Phases of the Conflict
Invasion Phase (March – May 2003): The U.S.-led coalition invaded Iraq on March 20, 2003. Baghdad fell on April 9, and on May 1, 2003, President George W. Bush declared the "end of major combat operations".
Insurgency & Civil War (2003 – 2010): Following the invasion, a violent insurgency arose against coalition forces and the new Iraqi government, escalating into a sectarian civil war by 2006. This period saw a significant "surge" of U.S. troops in 2007 to stabilize the country.
Transition & Withdrawal (2010 – 2011): Operation Iraqi Freedom officially ended on August 31, 2010, transitioning to Operation New Dawn, which focused on advising and assisting Iraqi forces. The final U.S. troops withdrew on December 18, 2011.
Later Involvement
Although the Iraq War formally ended in 2011, U.S. forces returned in 2014 to lead a new coalition against the Islamic State (ISIS) insurgency. As of early 2026, a small number of U.S. troops remain in Iraq in a "train and advise" capacity.

While the old deal wasn't perfect it's a given that Donnie wouldn't have left it in place if it had been signed by anyone except Obama or Biden. And Trump doesn't have the negotiating skills (or intelligence) to be able to replace it.
