“Enforcement of Texas’ “Bathroom Bill” Draws Challenges”

“Senate Bill 8, also known as the Texas Women’s Privacy Act, restricts what public restrooms, locker rooms and other similar facilities transgender people can use in public buildings by determining access based on sex assigned at birth.”

[Shift's comment - since many places allow individuals to change the gender marker on their ID how is it possible to determine the sex someone was assigned at birth?]

“The law does not mandate a policy, but requires that cities, counties and public agencies take “every reasonable step” to ensure people do not enter restrooms not matching their sex assigned at birth.”

The problem is that instead of weeding and using things like birds to keep insects down, we have instead resorted to herbicides and pesticides.
And maker of these herbicides and pesticides decided instead of risky toxins they could get sued over, they would instead just use hormones that prevent the reproduction of weeds and insects.
While that sounds better than toxins, these hormones are getting into the food chain, and greatly altering birth gender and puberty gender.

What are you talking about?

Gender identity is innate - "those people" were born that way. Gender non-conformity is not something that suddenly crops up at puberty. Fact is, children self-identify by gender at a very young age - as early as two or three, long before puberty is even on the distant horizon.

Not in my experience.
While society tries to influence gender identity, like males being expected to do brutal things like sports while females are expected to do artistic stuff like sewing, I don't think there is any gender identity until puberty.

Neither gender has any sexual attraction until after puberty.
That is what puberty is for.
And without sexual attraction, there can be no gender identity.

Just in case you are gullible enough to think bans on trans healthcare for kids have anything to do with protecting anyone’s health…

Wow.
It is so strange how something that has no effect on anyone else, could become so targeted?

Gender identity (the sense of being male, female, whatever) is not related to sexual attraction. Children self-identify by gender at a very young age (as early as two or three) long before any sort of sexual attraction enters the picture.

And without sexual attraction, there can be no gender identity.
You seem to be confusing sexual attraction/orientation with gender identity. The two are different subjects.

First a basic fact - sex and gender are not the same thing. People use the terms interchangeably in common speech but the medical and scientific communities differentiate between the two. And they don’t always agree.

For a very long time, the words “gender” and “sex” were used interchangeably, but that is not only no longer the case, but also nowhere close to the truth. So… for those who want to progress with the times and embrace the full spectrum of human identity, a common question arises: what is the difference between sex and gender?
Male and female brains are physically different. They are composed of different types of cells and they think with different parts of the brain. That’s one of the reasons that certain types of head injuries affect men and women differently.

http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/19955753

As the article points out:

...since sexual differentiation of the genitals takes place in the first two months of pregnancy and sexual differentiation of the brain starts in the second half of pregnancy, these two processes can be influenced independently, which may result in extreme cases in trans-sexuality. This also means that in the event of ambiguous sex at birth, the degree of masculinization of the genitals may not reflect the degree of masculinization of the brain. There is no indication that social environment after birth has an effect on gender identity or sexual orientation.
To grossly oversimplify that means that some kids are simply born with a "girl brain in a boy body" or vice versa.

Agreed.
It likely is a differentiation in the brain.
But it is most noticeable after puberty I think.

And the other important point is that while DNA is supposed to dictate hormones that effect brain growth, there are lots of reason it does not always work right.

In early 2025, a new federal prison rule brought renewed attention to how transgender inmates are housed in U.S. prisons. Under this policy, individuals who were assigned male at birth are to be placed in men’s federal prisons, even if they identify as women.
As a result, some transgender women who had previously been housed in women’s facilities were informed they could be transferred to men’s prisons.
The rule also impacts certain medical care and support services available to transgender inmates. Government officials say the changes are meant to follow existing federal prison standards and focus on safety and security for everyone inside the system.
However, the policy has raised concerns among transgender prisoners and advocacy groups. Several legal challenges were filed, and in response, judges have temporarily blocked some of the planned transfers.
Because of these court decisions, the rule is not being applied the same way everywhere, and different federal prisons are handling the situation differently.
At this point, the issue is still unfolding. Officials say they are trying to balance safety, legal requirements, and inmate welfare while the courts continue to review the challenges. Many people are closely watching to see how this policy is enforced and how it affects those living in federal prisons.

Some laymen may believe humans are more highly evolved than the common house fly. Some entomologist may disagree.
Evolution does not occur within individuals, but inter-generationally. There are more house fly generations per decade than human gens.
Thus more house fly evolution per human generation. AND
house flies got a big head start, evolving millions of years before humans.

The male & female standards play a well known role in species perpetuation. Is there some benefit to non-standards we're overlooking?

it does not always work right.
Adversity driven attrition drives evolution.
For a mutation to proliferate it must out-compete.
But as most if not all mutations are random, improving the genome naturally is a slow process. Trial & error.

So instead of calling it a "federal penitentiary", call it "penitentiary and debauchery palace". Right?

It can be argued that the "screw everything that moves and worry about it's sex afterwards gene" is actually beneficial to the species since it leads to more offspring and a more diverse gene pool.

I did read a serious scientific article that reached this conclusion but can't find it now.

In high school biology class I was taught though sickle cell anemia is a severe disease, it imparts some protection from malaria, thus imparting some benefit to those afflicted.
Not sure I'm buying it. But it was the inspiration for my #1,096.

Wilson switched my light-bulb on.
Until then my mind used the tape recorder metaphor, that humans use DNA in our cell's nucleus to code for our traits.

Wilson said that's backwards.
Human DNA churns out individuals which compete against one another, akin to the way nations compete by presenting Olympic competitors.
The DNA that codes for the superior competitors (reproducers) proliferates.
