Judge says discrimination case brought by trans tennis player can move forward
Trans tennis player Cammie Woodman brought a discrimination lawsuit against a league that tried to ban her from women's competition.A New York county supreme court judge has denied a request to dismiss a discrimination case by Cammie Woodman, a trans woman who was disqualified from a New York Metro tennis league.
In the ruling, King County Supreme Court judge Gina Abadi stated that Woodman’s complaint against The Tennis League Network, TLN CEO Steve Chagnon and Margaret Huffman, the first opponent of Woodman when league play opened in March of this year, has merit and should continue.
“The complaint sufficiently alleges that the applicable defendants violated each of the New York State Human Rights Laws on the basis of gender identity or expression in connection with a place of public accommodation, resort or amusement, and on the basis of gender in connection with a place or provider of public accommodation,” the decision stated.
Abadi also pointed out that Hullman is liable for “aiding and abetting the Chagnon defendants’
discriminatory conduct under the State HRL and City HRL” in regard to emails sent by Huffman to Chagnon stating, “Cammi Woodman is a male playing in a women’s league” after the two played in a scheduled match in March that Woodman won in straight sets.
