Hunter Marquez, right, graduates Class of 2025 at the U.S. Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs, Colo. Despite completing their training and meeting all the physical requirements for service, Marquez has been denied a military commission under the U.S. president's transgender military ban.

Serving in the U.S. military felt like a calling for Hunter Marquez.

The 22-year-old cadet has spent the last four years training at the U.S. Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs, Colo., culminating in an emotional graduation ceremony last week, surrounded by friends and families.

With degrees in aeronautical engineering and applied mathematics, Marquez expected to be commissioned as a second lieutenant and as a combat systems officer.

Instead, they've been barred from service and placed on administrative leave under the U.S. President Donald Trump's transgender military ban, along with two of their fellow graduates.

"I grew up loving this country … so I thought this was the best thing that I could do with my life, was giving back," Marquez told As It Happens host Nil Kӧksal. "Being transgender does not define my ability to serve."

Regardless, being transgender does define their eligibility to serve, according to the U.S. Air Force.

"Service members and applicants for military service who have a current diagnosis or history of, or exhibit symptoms consistent with, gender dysphoria are incompatible with the requirements of military service and are no longer eligible," an Air Force spokesperson told CBC in an email.

Simone Biles took offense to OutKick contributor Riley Gaines calling out a Minnesota high school whose softball team won a state championship Friday with a transgender pitcher.
Marissa Rothenberger, a transgender athlete, tossed a shutout to continue a dominant postseason and give Champlin Park High School a state championship.
The Minnesota State High School League posted a photo of the team on social media after the game, and Gaines noted the comments on X were turned off.
"To be expected when your star player is a boy," Gaines wrote.
Biles, a seven-time Olympic gold medalist, saw the post and told Gaines she was "truly sick."
"All of this campaigning because you lost a race. Straight up sore loser," Biles wrote to Gaines, who competed against trans swimmer Lia Thomas in 2022.

This S. Biles / R. Gaines dispute may not resolve the issue.
But it demonstrates the contention.

Re #762 - well done Ms Biles.

It's not that long ago that white female athletes were complaining that black women shouldn't be allowed to compete because they had too many natural advantages. Basically that they weren't feminine enough.

After Lee's surrender to Grant at Appomattox April 9, 1865 both Confederate and Union troops rode trains to return to their homes. But due to the persistent racism of the day, victorious Negro Union troops were required to ride in the back of the train, while defeated White Confederate troops rode in front.
Escaped slave / abolitionist / journalist / influential lecturer Frederick Douglass responded:

"We Negroes love our country. We fought for it. We ask only that we be treated as well as those that fought against it." Fredric Douglass

Good idea Fred.

Love is its own reward.
Hate harms the hater.

During the reign of VHS I rented The Times of Harvey Milk.
May not be available in VHS, but BN has it in Blu-ray.

"Florida LGBTQ activists defy DeSantis - light bridge in pride colors with handheld lights" #767
This is not as consequential as permanently enacting full legal equality and social justice throughout the globe for perpetuity. BUT !!
It's still an impressive accomplishment, requiring forethought, advanced planning, and skilled coordinated implementation.
Enjoy the rainbow Ronald.

Seems that they had originally wanted to light up a different bridge but that was a lift bridge and, despite the fact that there were no ships coming, the bridge was raised which is why they used this bridge.

Madam Rowling authored the wildly popular, commercially frightfully successful Harry Potter series. - splendid -

Is there a direct connection between Harry Potter and Star Trek: Next Generation?

Beam me up Scotty, and this time, with pants ON if you please (smart ***).

Is there a direct connection between Harry Potter and Star Trek: Next Generation?
No that I'm aware of but Star Trek TNG pics are used in a lot of Dad joke pics so I'm sure that whoever originally made this one was just following suit
