President-elect Donald Trump picked Kari Lake, a longtime loyalist and failed Arizona gubernatorial and senatorial candidate, as director of U.S. state-owned broadcaster Voice of America.
Lake, a former local news anchor at Fox 10 Phoenix, became one of the loudest voices casting doubt on the results of the 2020 presidential election after Trump’s loss to Joe Biden. She repeated her claims of election fraud after she narrowly lost the 2022 gubernatorial race in Arizona, never conceding to her Democratic rival Katie Hobbs.
Lake tried to run for public office a second time in 2024, this time hoping Trump’s name on the ticket would propel her to the Senate seat vacated by outgoing Sen. Kyrsten Sinema. She ended up losing to Democrat Ruben Gallego—even though Trump carried the state in the presidential count.

Exclusive: Trump transition wants to scrap crash reporting requirement opposed by Tesla

  • Trump transition team recommends repealing requirement that companies report automated vehicle crash data
  • Elon Musk's Tesla opposes the requirement, arguing it has unfairly targeted his company
  • Unclear if Donald Trump administration will adopt the recommendation to quash reporting requirement
Dec 13 (Reuters) - The Trump transition team wants the incoming administration to drop a car-crash reporting requirement opposed by Elon Musk’s Tesla (TSLA.O)
, opens new tab, according to a document seen by Reuters, a move that could cripple the government’s ability to investigate and regulate the safety of vehicles with automated-driving systems.
Musk, the world's richest person, spent more than a quarter of a billion dollars helping Trump get elected president in November. Removing the crash-disclosure provision would particularly benefit Tesla, which has reported most of the crashes – more than 1,500 – to federal safety regulators under the program. Tesla has been targeted in National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) investigations, including three stemming from the data.

Elon Musk's Tesla opposes the requirement, arguing it has unfairly targeted his company
How does it "unfairly" target his company? After all, this applies to all vehicles, not just his, so unless there is something seriously wrong with his vehicles why should he be concerned?

Tesla Cybertruck Sales Surge In Q3 As Used Price Crashes

The Tesla Cybertruck was the third bestselling EV in the U.S. in the third quarter, defying conventional wisdom. Used prices, meanwhile, are falling as more new Cybertrucks flood the market.

Despite a lavish price tag starting at about $100,000, the Tesla pickup outsold every EV in the U.S. in the third quarter except for the Model Y and Model 3, according to Cox Automotive, which owns Kelley Blue Book.

“Despite a six-figure price tag – average transaction price in September was north of $116,000, according to Kelley Blue Book estimates – more than 16,000 Cybertrucks were sold in Q3,” KBB said. “In fact, Cybertruck outsold every other available EV except for two – Tesla’s popular Model Y and Model 3.” Overall, Tesla’s share of the U.S. EV market was just shy of 50 percent. “After seeing sales fall year over year in the first half, market leader Tesla returned to growth mode in Q3, with sales up 6.6%,” KBB said.

EV sales leaders in the third quarter (in units sold):

  • (1) Tesla Model Y: 86,801, down 9.1% from a year ago.
  • (2) Tesla Model 3: 58,423, up 9.7% from a year ago.
  • (3) Tesla Cybertruck: 16,692 — no year-to-year numbers but overall EV segment share is up to 4.8% from 3.0%. Total year-to-date sold is 28,250.
  • (4) Ford Mustang Mach-E: 13,392, down 9.8% from a year ago.
  • (5) Honda Prologue: 12,644 — no year-to-year numbers as it’s new to the market.

I was wondering whether Elon Musk's support for Trump would cost Musk market share.
Apparently rather more the opposite.

3 reasons to drop the dumpster where X marks the spot:
- So the workmen filling it don't bash up cars parked inches from it.
- So the truck that delivered it, that may out-track it, can retrieve it, even if the parking lot is crowded.
- Bad aim.

This guy's aim looks pretty good. The white line foreground to background the dumpster's on splits the dumpster at the longitudinal centerline.

Still, a finger in Elon Musk's eye is a finger of mine.

FIRST ON FOX– ABC News and its top anchor George Stephanopoulos have reached a settlement with Donald Trump in his defamation suit, which will result in the news network paying the president-elect $15 million.
Trump filed a defamation suit against Stephanopoulos after he asserted that Trump was found "liable for rape" in a civil case during a contentious interview with Rep. Nancy Mace, R-S.C., last March.
Stephanopoulos repeated that claim ten times during his spat with Mace, despite the fact that a jury actually determined Trump was liable for "sexual abuse," which has a distinct definition under New York law.

I'm w/ FOX / Trump on this one.
No huge fan of Trump here. But Stephanopoulos should know better.

True - but it was the judge who first used the word "rape" when describing what sexual abuse was - speaking from memory he said that Trump's actions would be considered rape by the general public.

If ABC-TV News George Stephanopoulos purely had free-floating contempt and hostility against Trump, justified by no more than a Trump shoes / belt mismatch, then Stephanopoulos might have to embellish.
Masterminding an insurrection is far worse than a fashion faux pas.

Even outside today's nit-picking political climate, preserving journalistic integrity is important. By undermining himself on this one detail, Stephanopoulos undermines himself more broadly, and ABC-TV News along with him.
The settlement provides Trump establishment validation.

Most money spent on lottery tickets produce no revenue for the ticket purchase. Yet thousands of lottery tickets are sold daily, because of the non-zero possibility of winning a $jackpot.

Whether by sloth or guile Stephanopoulos rolled the dice here, and lost. Why? What was there to gain?
I know better than to do that. Stephanopoulos should too.

And by Stephanopoulos crossing the line here, he gains nothing (no $jackpot), hands Trump a needless win.

I suspect the public tends to perceive rape as forcible coitus. Isn't the legal definition broader?

I suspect the public tends to perceive rape as forcible coitus. Isn't the legal definition broader?
Much broader

The revised UCR definition of rape is: Penetration, no matter how slight, of the vagina or anus with any body part or object, or oral penetration by a sex organ of another person, without the consent of the victim. Attempts or assaults to commit rape are also included; however, statutory rape and incest are excluded.
And it's actually more complicated than that

The cliche' is: "Half the people you know are below average."

Trump won the election.
Apparently substantially more than half the population is below average. :cautious:

First Trump didn't win the popular vote - he got slightly less than half of the votes cast and only something like 65% of eligible voters even bothered to vote.

BTW, the only way that cliche works is if you interpret "average" as the "median" - that's not the same as the "arithmetic mean" (which is what people commonly are referring to when they say "average")

I did not know that.

Not sure it matters: "President-elect" Trump.

"Average", "median", and "mean" may be used interchangeably by laymen.
They're not synonyms, your point I gather.

I should know better than to tell a silly joke like my #34 to a mathemagician. A moment of weakness?
Frustration?
Horror?

"Mean, median, and mode " S2 #37
This definition of "mode" is a new to me.

Trump promised he'd end war in Ukraine before taking office. Now? He 'might.' | Opinion

Chris Brennan / Tue, December 17, 2024 at 4:31 AM EST·5
President-elect Donald Trump made plenty of promises on the campaign trail this year. One stood out as his most audacious vow – he would swiftly end the war between Ukraine and Russia, even before being inaugurated.
Trump, now five weeks away from taking the oath of office again, was asked about that Monday. And it became immediately clear that the former and future president had moved on from audaciousness to a mix of ambiguity and ambivalence.
Consider Trump's response during a news conference at his Mar-a-Lago estate in Palm Beach, Florida, when a reporter noted that he had promised to end the war before he took office and asked if he could still get that done.
"I'm going to try," Trump said.

Liar.
