POLITICAL CONSERVATISM: Principle Without A U.S. Political Champion ?

Can a $tax $payer, voter, or politician legitimately claim to be political conservative if unable to name a political principle s/he wishes to conserve?

Ideological purity, simplicity appeals to purists.
Conservative absolutists might literally have us living in caves repelling nocturnal predators with campfire.
Progressives might wish to abandon or modify beyond recognition our Constitution, ratified in an era when the fastest form of travel was horseback.

Thus governance in our new millennium is a combination, part science, part art. We endeavor to embrace improvement in efficiency, while preserving indispensable fundamentals.

Who in U.S. politics today are the true political conservatives? Those who endeavor to usurp women's right of choice? That's authoritarianism, contradicting, usurping the Founding principle of Liberty.

"I know of no safe depository of the ultimate powers of society but the people themselves, and if we think them not enlightened enough to exercise control with a wholesome discretion, the remedy is not to take it from them, but to inform their discretion." Thomas Jefferson

Religious zealots may try to impose their religious preference on others ostensibly supported by the divine imprimatur, "life begins at conception".

But holy scripture explicitly refutes that modern political slogan:

"For the life of the flesh is in the blood ...” KJV Leviticus 17:11

Blood, hemoglobin isn't present in the embryo until weeks after conception.
So the political slogan "life begins at conception" is not only refuted by holy scripture, it's also a conspicuous scientific absurdity. It presumes egg & sperm are not alive before conception.

The result:
the uneasy coalition of conservative & progressive in U.S. politics is an unending contest.

BUT !
The 13 megaton guerrilla in the living-room, the pseudo-cons.
Political conservatism in the U.S. may be among the noblest, the most reliable ideologies. Conservatism intrinsically embodies reliability, stability, traditions that would never have gained tenure without earning it.

This virtue intrinsic to political conservatism has earned prestige lesser ideologies, particularly fraudulent ideologies have not, can not legitimately obtain.
An obvious recent example, the presidential administration of GWB:

"... the magnificently misnamed "neo-conservatives", are the most radical people in this town [Washington DC]" George Will / ABC-TV This Week July 16, 2006
"What is conservatism? Is it not adherence to the old and tried, against the new and untried?" Abraham Lincoln Feb. 27, 1860

To casual observers that encounter those claiming to be political conservatives, ask what it is these ostensible-cons endeavor to conserve.
And to any pseudo-con that pretends to the honor of genuine conservatism, thereby attempting to ennoble the unworthy, shame on you.
Are you so disgraced, ashamed by the ideology you support you're not even willing to admit to yourself your own true ideology? So you pretend to conservatism?
