"The Bible contains six admonishments to homosexuals and 362 admonishments to heterosexuals.
That doesn't mean that God doesn't love heterosexuals. It's just that they need more supervision." -Lynn Lavner

The bible is odd because no one even knows who wrote it?

It may be a minor factor, but we may be victim of English.
Either testament, or both combined might informally be called a "book", because any of the three can be presented in a single bound volume, also sometimes called a "book". BUT !
More precisely the Holy Bible is a combination of books, listed here:

BUT !

Each of these many Biblical books has at least one author, though some believe origins may trace back to myths from preliterate cultures.
Thus even if some survived unwritten for unknown generations, faithful adherence to storyline may not necessarily also mean accurate adherence to original wording, Fugelsang's point as follows:
"These [Biblical] books existed in the oral tradition for hundreds of thousands of years. They finally wrote them down in Aramaic,
later translated into Greek, & then Latin, and finally English, hundreds and hundreds of revisions: and this is supposed to be absolute direct word of God." actor John Fugelsang

Exactly.
The sources are highly suspect due to the constant modifications and unknown origins.

What brought this up is that I was arguing with an Israeli about whether or not Israel should exist, and his point was that since Israel tolerates gays, it was better than the Islamic Palestinians.
Which I had difficulty answering, since if Israel is accepting gays, then it would seem to be a contradiction with the Old Testament and Talmud?

Israel isn't pure.
Israel may go easy on gays, but remains unforgiving about foreskins.
Saudi Arabia is about oil.
Israel is about mohel.

A little bit less unseriously:
characterizing the egalitarianism of a nation, a culture by anecdote is folly.
You knew that.

Since Israeli settlers are killing Palestinians, and Israel just passed a law allowing death penalty for Palestinians but not for Israelis, I think Israel is not really egalitarian at all?
But I think what is right for any country has to be up to the natives.
And I don't think that there is such a thing as an Israeli native?
