I'm sure that the West Point grads would rather Kermit had delivered their commencement speech than Trump.

And the word slight is doing a lot of heavy lifting there.

Another speech the West Point grads would have preferred #1,982
U.S. military service member swear an oath of fidelity before serving. BUT !!
It's not one uniform oath.
Instead, enlisted troops swear one oath, commissioned officers another.

Oath of Enlistment

I, _____, do solemnly swear (or affirm) that I will support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic; that I will bear true faith and allegiance to the same; and that I will obey the orders of the President of the United States and the orders of the officers appointed over me, according to regulations and the Uniform Code of Military Justice. So help me God. (Title 10, US Code; Act of 5 May 1960 replacing the wording first adopted in 1789, with amendment effective 5 October 1962).

Oath of Commissioned Officers

I ___, do solemnly swear (or affirm) that I will support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic; that I will bear true faith and allegiance to the same; that I take this obligation freely, without any mental reservation or purpose of evasion; and that I will well and faithfully discharge the duties of the office on which I am about to enter. So help me God. (Title 5 U.S. Code 3331, an individual, except the President, elected or appointed to an office of honor or profit in the civil service or uniformed services)

It's not much reassurance, but enlisted ranks are sworn to obey the president, Constitutionally the "Commander in Chief". BUT !
According to this plausible source, commissioned officers are not explicitly, instead pledging fidelity to the Constitution. Does that qualify as a glimmer of hope in this Trump administration?

The historian's opinion I've found indicates the Founders envisioned citizen legislators, rather than career politicians. But our system rewards the latter.
The problem is supply-&-demand.
It's a charming image for the population of our legislature reflect, mirror that of our nation. BUT !
Voters can't vote for those that don't run.

And so here we are.

Bob Menendez

American politician (born 1954)

Robert Menendez (born January 1, 1954) is an American lawyer, former politician, and convicted felon who served as a United States senator from New Jersey from 2006 until his resignation in 2024 following his conviction on 16 counts in a political corruption case. He was sentenced to 11 years in prison in January 2025. A member of the Democratic Party and the Cuban–American lobby, he was first appointed to the Senate by Governor Jon Corzine, and chaired the United States Senate Committee on Foreign Relations from 2013 to 2015 and from 2021 to 2023.

Sadly it's because their ideas are not mainstream ....

"The SPLC attributes the decline in the number of hate groups to a lesser sense of urgency to organize, as the groups' beliefs have infiltrated politics, education, and society in general. Some of the ways they've achieved this are through pushing for bans on diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives and book bans, the report says.

"It's disheartening, but it tracks. Why form a new hate group when all you have to do is be a MAGA republican?

I thought perhaps I could obtain an Instagram logon, & perhaps that might also impart access to Faceplant.

BUT !
The obvious: a camera that connects via USB. That way, easily hard-unwired, meaning cannot be surreptitiously activated by spyware / malware.
