The root word of "history" is "story".
Can we separate history from legend, myth?

One popular myth of the U.S. Founding:
"In the past we've said that "on July 4th, 1776, George III, king of England, wrote in his diary, 'Nothing of importance happened today.'"
Turns out we were taken in by an old historic myth.
"King George III never kept a diary," says Arnold Hunt, curator of historical manuscripts at the British Library. "The quote is a variation of another well-known story from the French revolution," he says.

"When I was a boy the Sioux owned the world. The sun rose and set on our land. Where are the lands today? What treaty has the white man ever made with us that they kept? Not one." Chief Sitting Bull

After Lee's surrender to Grant at Appomattox April 9, 1865 both Confederate and Union troops rode trains to return to their homes. But due to the persistent racism of the day, victorious Negro Union troops were required to ride in the back of the train, while defeated White Confederate troops rode in front.
Escaped slave / abolitionist / journalist / influential lecturer Frederick Douglass responded:
"We Negroes love our country. We fought for it. We ask only that we be treated as well as those that fought against it." Fredric Douglass

A century later: Rosa Parks

The following is a link to a version of United States Founding history embellished by master huckster Paul Harvey.
“We mutually pledge to each other our lives, our fortunes and our sacred honor.”

Happy Birthday United States
