The US has confirmed it deployed a space weapon in Earth's orbit, the first time it has acknowledged such offensive capabilities.
US Secretary of the Air Force Troy Meink said the "on orbit" weapon was necessary to safeguard US forces against hostile enemy action.
Speaking at the Air, Space and Cyber Conference on Monday, Meink said the US was ready for "evolving threats", but did not elaborate on the weapon's capabilities or when it was put into orbit.

A 1967 treaty banned weapons of mass destruction in orbit. Since then, key powers including the US, Russia, and China have been exploring other capabilities outside of the treaty, such as targeting rivals' satellites - which are key for military communications, surveillance and navigation.
In early February, it was revealed that two Russian satellites had likely intercepted the communications of at least a dozen European ones since Russia's invasion of Ukraine in 2022.
Such interceptions may have allowed Russian intelligence services to read the sensitive data they transmit, or hypothetically, even to take control of the satellites.

The US Space Force says China "develops and operates space and counterspace capabilities as part of a military modernisation strategy," while Russia "views space as a warfighting domain and believes space supremacy will be a decisive factor in future conflicts".

Satellites help collect real-time information of matériel and troop movements, weather patterns, and more.

Are these U.S. deployments into orbit a guarantor of peace? Or preparation for war?

Part of the danger here, unlike a small arms border skirmish as between India and Pakistan in Kashmir, disabling satellites could quickly escalate.

She boarded an ordinary flight from Arizona to Canada. Somewhere along the way, however, the cabin crew were handed a handwritten note with a request they probably weren’t expecting: asylum in Canada.

The unusual incident reportedly unfolded aboard Air Canada flight AC1730 from Phoenix to Montreal on Sunday, September 20, with the US citizen seated in Row 14 when she gave flight attendants notes explicitly requesting asylum.

Despite the extraordinary request, there was no emergency in the cabin. The woman was reportedly calm and remained seated, while the pilots advised that she posed no threat and decided there was no reason to divert the Airbus A319.

AC1730 therefore continued normally to Montreal, landing around four hours after leaving Phoenix, where Canadian authorities and border officials were reportedly waiting to deal with the passenger and her request.

And surprisingly, being American doesn’t automatically prevent someone from seeking asylum in Canada. US citizens are exempt from the Canada-US Safe Third Country Agreement, although making a claim certainly doesn’t mean it will be accepted.

What happened to her asylum claim after landing has not yet been publicly confirmed.
