Back in 1997, Ashley Judd was on an unstoppable trajectory. Fresh off the successes of *Kiss the Girls* and *A Time to Kill*, with *Double Jeopardy* right around the corner, she wasn't just landing parts—she was forging a legendary career. Then came a meeting at the Peninsula Beverly Hills. Producer Harvey Weinstein had summoned her to discuss potential projects. She arrived expecting a standard business pitch. Instead, she was directed up to his hotel suite, where he was lounging in a bathrobe and making demands that had absolutely nothing to do with movies. She walked out. The missing piece of the puzzle finally arrived in December 2017, during an interview director Peter Jackson gave to a New Zealand publication. Jackson revealed that during the casting process for *The Lord of the Rings*, he and his producing partner Fran Walsh had been eager to cast Judd in one of two major roles. They had even met with her. But then, Miramax—Weinstein’s company—stepped in. Jackson recalled being warned that Judd was "a nightmare to work with" and that they should avoid her "at all costs." Trusting his business partners, Jackson took her off the shortlist.

Jailed since his original conviction, Weinstein has already served more than six years behind bars, leaving him with about nine years on his sentence. But a pending resentencing in Los Angeles, where he was originally ordered to serve 16 years in prison for a 2013 rape, could put him away for the rest of his life.

Farber said it'll be his counterpart in California who decides whether Weinstein can serve his sentences at the same time. If it were up to him, Farber said, he'd run them consecutively, stacking Weinstein's New York punishment on top of his Los Angeles sentence.
