For those of us that have been using the term "conservative", & "liberal" for several decades, a few human generations, the definitions have shifted, somewhat akin to continental drift. It's not a recent development.

There are many things one can say about the Gordie Howe International Bridge. It‘s big, expensive, it connects Detroit and Windsor, and it was built to move goods, relieve pressure on the Ambassador Bridge, and make one of the busiest trade corridors in North America work a little less like a clogged sink with international paperwork.

It is also, apparently, too dangerous to cut a ribbon near. The ribbon-cutting for the new bridge was supposed to happen on June 12. Then, with the ceremony close enough that someone had probably already ordered the scissors, it was postponed. The official explanation was that Canada and the United States needed more time to resolve “outstanding issues.”

That phrase is doing a lot of work, “outstanding issues” can mean anything. It can mean permits, paperwork, or that someone discovered the commemorative plaque spelled Windsor with a z. It can also mean that a publicly funded bridge, years in the making, somehow became inconvenient at the exact moment it was ready to be useful.

Now, we should be fair, fairness is important. Fairness is the small decorative parsley sprig of political writing. So here are the facts, arranged without accusation, merely in the order in which they appear to have happened.

The Moroun family owns the Ambassador Bridge, the private Detroit-Windsor crossing that has long enjoyed a very profitable place in the world. The Gordie Howe International Bridge is its publicly owned competitor. Naturally, the Morouns have not greeted this new bridge like a baby nephew at Thanksgiving.

Earlier this year, Matthew Moroun donated $1 million to MAGA Inc., a Trump-aligned super PAC. Then Donald Trump decided the new bridge was a problem. He complained that the United States was not getting enough out of the deal, even though Canada financed the project and Michigan stands to benefit from the new crossing. He demanded that .....

Whether the mid-term elections will empower the Dems enough to restrain vladimir gluten remains to be seen.

When we went to bed June 30, we had a 16-year CUSMA agreement, which Trump repeatedly violated. Going to bed on July 1, we have a 10-year CUSMA agreement, which Trump will continue to violate. The US tried to pit Mexico against Canada, but Mark Carney & Claudia Sheinbaum held the exact same position… Canada & Mexico calmly said: “Ok, we’re happy to wait for a more reasonable US team in a couple years.” I’m really proud of Canada’s team. Happy Canada Day.
 
A little history ....

Tommy Douglas is 6 years old when he falls on a rock in Falkirk, Scotland, and cuts his knee.

The wound won't heal.

In 8 years when he's 55, he can start collecting a public pension of around $120,000 per year. He voted to make the rest of us wait until we're 67 to collect our $20,000 or so per year from the CPP that we paid for.

Poilievre has headlined over 50 private, high-priced fundraisers attended by dozens of lobbyists and corporate executives from sectors like pharmaceuticals and oil and gas. At least 13 current or former staff members, including his principal secretary and chief of staff, have been targeted by oil and gas lobbyists. While publicly criticizing "big business" and lobbyists, his team maintains regular contact with them.

Pat King just lost a major appeal, and the Ontario Court of Appeal didn't mince words. The court overturned his acquittal on intimidation, entered a conviction, and ordered that he be sentenced again. More importantly, the judges rejected the idea that the convoy was simply a peaceful protest that got out of hand.

The Ontario Court of Appeal has overturned Pat King’s 2024 acquittal on an intimidation charge, finding that the trial judge erred in law by classifying his convoy-related actions as a lawful protest. King has now been convicted of intimidation, and the court has ordered a new sentencing hearing to reconsider his total penalty. A primary piece of evidence used by critics to argue that the protest had anti-democratic goals was a document called the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU), promoted early on by Canada Unity (one of the core organizing groups associated with the convoy). The MOU explicitly called for the Governor General of Canada and the Senate to bypass the elected House of Commons, dissolve the sitting government, and form a joint committee with the convoy organizers to govern the country. Following heavy public and legal blowback pointing out that this demand was inherently anti-democratic and unconstitutional, the organizers officially withdrew the MOU. He should have been charged with or convicted of treason, sedition, or an explicit attempt to overthrow the government. Because his original three-month conditional sentence and probation for mischief convictions were deemed too lenient by the appeals court, he faces fresh sentencing submissions. While the Crown originally sought a 10-year maximum prison sentence for mischief CBC News, the addition of the intimidation conviction and a directive from the appellate judges to fully reflect the public impact of his actions means he now faces a substantially heavier penalty than his previous house arrest.

Upcoming Hearing: A new sentencing hearing will be scheduled at the Ontario Superior Court, where the judge will determine a single new sentence that incorporates the fresh intimidation conviction with his original five convictions (mischief, counseling mischief, counseling to obstruct police, and disobeying a court order).

The Legal Rulings

The Appeal: Crown prosecutors argued the original sentence was far too lenient and that the trial judge misapplied the law regarding public demonstrations.

The Decision: The three-judge appeal panel ruled that "criminal conduct is not less criminal because it occurs during a lawful protest". The judges formally convicted King of one count of intimidation.

The Convoy's Nature: In the written decision, the appeal panel rejected the trial judge's earlier assessment, instead describing the 2022 protest as "a co-ordinated, targeted attack on Ottawa residents aimed at coercing change through highly disruptive criminal conduct".

Previous Convictions and Re-Sentencing:

Existing Sentences: King had previously been found guilty of five other Criminal Code charges tied to his leadership role, including mischief, counselling others to commit mischief, and disobeying a court order, resulting in a 12-month conditional sentence.

Next Steps: Because of the new intimidation conviction and the appeal court's finding that the initial sentence was too lenient, a new hearing will be scheduled to reconsider his total penalty.

A planned joint ceremony on Friday between the U.S. and Canada marking the opening of the Gordie Howe International Bridge has been canceled after President Trump announced a 50 percent tariff on certain Canadian imports, including alcohol and dairy.

The tariffs were in response to what the administration described as "discriminatory" trade measures from Canada, and a senior administration official confirmed to reporters that it impacted products ranging from "wine to hockey sticks to cement."

Earlier this month, the two countries agreed to open the long-delayed $4.7 billion bridge connecting Detroit to Windsor, Ontario, following a slate of negotiations that Trump said brought a "much better deal" for the U.S. on toll revenue.

"In light of trade action threatened by the United States earlier this week, it would be inappropriate to proceed with a celebratory event between the two countries," Jenna Ghassabeh, a spokesperson for Canadian Infrastructure Minister Gregor Robertson, said in a statement to the Associated Press.

"We remain committed to opening the bridge on July 27th, and to celebrating this milestone among Canadians on July 24th," she continued.

Canada now plans to hold its own opening ceremony on Friday, ahead of its planned opening on July 27. It is unclear whether the U.S. will hold its own separate ceremony.

The bridge is named after Canadian hockey star Gordie Howe, who spent 25 seasons with the Detroit Red Wings.

Trump’s social media rant concerning the smoke from Canadian wildfires impacting the health of Americans should serve as a timely reminder that the United States of America cannot be trusted.

In his online tirade, Trump revealed his true intent, which is to heighten and intensity his attack on our economy by imposing yet more tariffs. He is hoping this aggressive action will result in Canada paying more money to the United States.

If Trump’e extortionist threats actually materialize on August 19, and he does indeed tariff the equivalent of 5% of our annual exports to the United States, Canada should respond quickly and definitively by pursuing some or all of the ....
