For my Canadian friends

Send this to every Canadian and every American you know and love. Dean Blundell absolutely knocked it out of the park; it's so beautifully written. This is exactly the kind of writing that reminds you why everything matters. It's a little long, but every word counts. Canadians, this one's for us. Americans — it's for you too.

BREAKING: MARK CARNEY OFFICIALLY PUT A BULLET IN CANADA'S RELATIONSHIP WITH TRUMP'S AMERICA

Mark Carney simply never misses. This morning, he kindly put our relationship with Trump's America in a body bag while reminding us who we are.

DEAN BLUNDELL

APR 19, 2026

On Sunday morning, Mark Carney sat down in an Ottawa living room, looked into a camera, and said the quiet part out loud - in the most Canadian way possible.

The United States — our neighbour, our largest trading partner, the country whose economy has been braided into ours for the better part of two centuries — is no longer an ally we can count on. They are compromised by a conman. America is breaking, and yes, that special relationship isn’t just over; it’s a liability. The ties that made us strong have become the ties that make us vulnerable because America is a non-functional, malevolent nation. And he said it with a small bronze statue of Major-General Sir Isaac Brock on the desk beside him.

If you don’t know why that matters, stay with me because .....

I think Trump is temporary and the US will return to normal soon, so Canada and the US can repair things.

While Trump is temporary the damage he's done will take years (decades actually) to correct itself.

And on the international front Trump has shown the world that America's word is only good till the next election (if that long). It's going to take a very long time for the rest of the world to decide that America can be trusted.

I was w/ you until the last term in the sentence "correct itself".

We may call it repairable. But it won't happen by itself. It'll take skill, talent, international cooperation, and time. BUT !

The stupid neither forgive nor forget;
the naïve forgive and forget;
the wise forgive but do not forget.
psychiatrist Thomas Szasz

Sadly, the United States cannot be trusted. The past few centuries of history are strewn with example of why it cannot.

Your #502 has inspired me to formulate the following realizations:

Regarding individuals Schopenhauer observed: "Honor has not to be won; it must only not be lost." Arthur Schopenhauer (1788-1860), German philosopher

It's not quite the same for nations.

No nation can be trusted beyond the limitations of its ability to maintain its own principles. The U.S. has already failed that abysmally. Conclusively.
Jefferson penned "all men are created equal" in 1776.
Bob Lee didn't surrender @Appomattox until 1865.
MLK was murdered in 1968.
And that hasn't settled the matter.

Trump made Canada great again

This headline says a lot more than it looks like at first glance.

“Trump blames Canada. And tears our closest international relationship apart.”

That’s not hyperbole. That’s the reality Canada is now planning around.

As the piece puts it, this isn’t just about Trump as an individual. It’s about what the United States has shown it is willing to tolerate. After January 6, after everything, he was still returned to power. That changes how allies calculate risk.

Aaron Rupar summed it up perfectly“It isn’t just Trump that Canada can’t trust. It’s us, Americans.”

From a Canadian perspective, that line lands hard.

This is why Canada is diversifying trade. This is why Ottawa is hedging diplomatically. This is why the old assumption that things will simply snap back to normal no longer holds.

“No one can have faith things will revert to normal.”

This is not anti American sentiment. It’s strategic realism in a very unstable moment.

=======================================

If nothing else Trump has proven that America's word is only good until the next election (if that long). And it's going to take years for the world to forget that (assuming they ever do).

"... a very unstable moment" catalyzed by if not caused by the "extremely stable genius" *?

“No one can have faith things will revert to normal.” fb #508
That's a calculation complicated by the context of our rapidly evolving globalization.
Even if international trade ratios were restored to pre-Trump levels, the complexities / advancements of the global economy,
and the interval of time between the begining of the Trump divergence, and the completion of the post-Trump re-convergence
would likely render the end result unrecognized.
