"What I have read by anthropologists is that the "traditional" role of women was a matriarchy, since the men were usually out of camp on hunting or trading trips.
It was only when desertification in the Mideast caused constant war, that males took over the lead role." R5 #2,900
The complication is the time-scale disparity.
A transition from matriarchy and patriarchy can take place in a generation or two.
The evolutionary time-scale is orders of magnitude longer.

The complication is the statistical component. Even in a matriarch-dominant culture there may be a family or two with a passive wife, and a dictatorial husband.
Thus it ends up being a quibble over ratios, in a transition that may not leave much paleontological evidence of the culture being characterized.

The way I understand it is that females evolved for compassion while males evolved for aggression.
So the women raise the children and gardens, while the male is like the pit bull you chain in the back yard.
Males are needed when there is a threat, but otherwise you send them off on long trips to keep them out of trouble.

The problem was that by around 8000 BC in the Mideast, intertribal conflicts increased to the point the male temporary war chief became permanent.
Hawaii was likely about the last matriarchy.

Not sure it matters, but as I understand it human female chromosomes are normally paired.
Similar story for men EXCEPT instead of two X, men have one X and one Y.
This suggests to me it's the male, not the female that departed from the original evolutionary line.

Humans are mammals. That means mammary glands.
Women lactate. Men lack t'aint. [You're welcome S2 :( ;) ]
A nurturing gland like that would be of little if any evolutionary benefit if women weren't inclined to suckle their offspring.

Though both men & women may have testosterone, men generally have more.
It's somewhat akin to a turbocharger, stronger performance, at the cost of engine longevity.
Women tend to live longer than men. Testosterone may be part of the reason.

Genetics is far more complicated than the stuff we all learned in grade school, much of which was wrong in any case.

In addition to XX and XY there are a number of other possible combinations. And it's not as simple as XX=female and XY=male.

There are XX men and XY women. And an XY woman can mature normally, experience menses, become pregnant, and give birth to healthy children.
