I knew of both books, couldn't remember the title of the 2nd.
Trump is sooooo crooked, he has a recognizable pattern for his falsehoods.
When Trump has a weak or nonexistent case, he rarely pretends to make one, & instead just insults it.

That is so because of what William James explained:

What Massie addresses here is not merely about electoral success, temporary partisan stewardship of government.
And not only merely elections, periodic opportunities for the electorate to reward or punish officials elected to public office.
Sen. Massie seems to be somewhat delicately acknowledging current Republican governance has gone far beyond standards practiced for centuries.
Then and since, Trump has been purging both military and civilian facets of our government,
and it appears Trump has selects his appointees not on basis of competence to the appointed office, but instead
on basis of loyalty to Trump, rather than the Constitution.
Apparently Sen. Massie, the movement you recognize within the Republican party is intended to secure Republican party domination far beyond the next election.
