For my Canadian friends

"Find "POILIEVRE, Pierre" on your long ballot and clearly mark the spot behind his name." #219
One of the strategies for winning such a contest is attrition.
This "urgent voter information" is expensive to place in the newspaper. And maneuvering a political campaign opponent into outspending you 2 or 3 to one is an enormous advantage.

Be sure to go out and vote:

Hello from Ontario. Like Pierre Poilievre, I cannot vote in your riding, but unlike Pierre, I do not have an outsized media megaphone or the risk of losing my place to stay in Ottawa if I lose a byelection. He isn't running to represent you. He is running because his constituents of 20 years had enough of him and he refuses to move on. His interests are not your interests. His questionable and misleading media posts are a sad reminder of politics based on division, fear and anger.instead of the qualities of Canada that should make us proud to stand tall in our imperfect country. Canada is not broken, he is not the only one who can fix it. We can always improve, we will always want better. So remember that as you vote, choose your best candidate. But please.just get out and vote! Canada is stronger together!

For those who missed it, he won. Expected because the party parachuted him into the safest riding in the entire country.

Fear, Anger, and Division — Pierre Poilievre’s Latest Rhetoric Under the Microscope

Over the last few weeks, Pierre Poilievre has flooded social media with a stream of dramatic claims: accusing the government of building “only bureaucracy,” declaring that EV mandates “ban the rural way of life,” warning that “crime and extortion are out of control,” and labelling Canadian legislation “authoritarian censorship.” Let’s separate fact from fiction.

1. Bureaucracy vs. Nation-Building

Poilievre mocked the government for creating a Major Projects Office, calling it “just another bureaucracy.” In reality, the office is designed to streamline approvals for highways, ports, and energy corridors — exactly the kinds of projects he claims to want. Branding coordination as “bureaucracy” is a rhetorical trick: it discredits useful tools by attaching a negative label. Security studies warn that personalized attacks and discrediting of institutions are a recurring tactic to undermine trust in democracy.

2. EV Mandate = Ban on Rural Life?

Poilievre calls Canada’s 2035 Zero-Emission Vehicle sales standard a “ban on rural life.” That’s false. The policy applies to new vehicle sales over the next decade; it does not ban ownership or used vehicle sales, nor does it confiscate trucks or tractors. It is a supply-side rule aimed at ....

Poilievre & Gender Rights

By Steve Ward
🏳️‍⚧️

As usual, Mr. Poilievre is commenting on a subject with which he appears to be unfamiliar in terms of actual facts. The nurse in question made transphobic comments by insisting there are only two genders. Earlier this year, Mr. Poilievre betrayed his own transphobic perspective when he agreed with Trump's executive order requiring the United States government to only recognize two genders. In his post, he also referenced J.K. Rowling, author of the highly successful Harry Potter series of fantasy books. It has become readily apparent in recent years that Rowling also possesses ignorant and transphobic views and she has taken some career hits for her ignorance.

The larger question is who is this nurse to determine whether people's gender expression and gender identity are to be respected? Well, the Canadian Human Rights Act and the Criminal Code of Canada have the final say because gender identity and gender expression are listed as prohibited grounds for discrimination. The rights of transgender and non-binary individuals are enshrined in Canadian law, and that is why this transphobic nurse can and is being held accountable for her hate and ignorance by the BC Nurse's Association. It is also ironic that Mr. Poilievre sees himself as a 'tough on crime' crusader yet he also .....

"Beyond The Noise: Why Canada Wins With Carney."
By Peter Jones

Mark Carney spoke today about Canada’s future, and the message is clear: Canada can grow strong even as the world changes fast. He wants to protect Canadian workers, families, and businesses while building an economy that’s the strongest in the G7. The U.S. has been changing its trade rules, but instead of panicking or fighting for the sake of looking tough, Canada is taking smart, balanced steps to keep trade fair and prices stable.

A key part of the plan is lowering some tariffs on U.S. goods. That means Canadians pay less for everyday items, while Canadian businesses can keep working efficiently with our biggest trading partner. At the same time, steel, aluminum, and autos remain protected until negotiations finish. This is careful, strategic leadership—standing firm where it counts, and being flexible where it helps Canadians most.

Carney used a hockey analogy that makes it easy to picture: sometimes you drop the gloves and play tough in the corners, but often the smartest move is to stick handle, pass, and aim for the goal. That’s what Canada is doing now. Protecting key industries, investing in new sectors like clean energy and housing, and planning ahead so our economy stays competitive and resilient. Carney doesn’t ....

Please pardon the unscheduled detour:

Thomas Edison gets a gold star for switching off the dark by inventing the incandescent light bulb. BUT !
By 3rd Millennium standards they were power-guzzling dinosaurs.
The CFL, & the LED have sent Edison's bright idea to the retirement home, the museum.
“Democracy is the worst form of government, except for all the others.” attributed to Winston L. S. Churchill
Mr. Churchill sir,
even if true when you said it, it's a new millennium for lumens and governance alike.

Democracy certainly has demonstrated superiority over totalitarianism.

But in our new millennium, with new tools unprecedented in human history:
- telephone
- television
- Internet
- A.I.
are we overlooking the LED of 3rd millennium governance? Modular government? Something more efficient, more faithful to the needs of modern post-industrial humanity?

The axiom is: we act in our own enlightened self-interest. - dandy -
Then how do we explain President Trump? Ignorant U.S. voters, by the millions ?! Perhaps that explanation is as accurate as any.
We can't improve on that?
With the enormously powerful tool of A.I., we can't provide real-time fact-checking of political candidates?

It seems to this ignorant South of the border amateur observer we're battling 3rd Millennium monsters with 2nd Millennium tools & techniques.
That may not mean it's a problem we can solve before lunchtime today. BUT !!
Sometimes, when we consider an issue, we are obliged to include the entire panorama, not just our favorite 2 degree slice.

Putin willing, this Canadian contest will play out as others in the past. One of the candidates will win, consequences flow.
But at some point doesn't it make sense to consider stepping off the treadmill? Even hamsters are smart enough to do that.

ref:
Ethical philosophy
Enlightened self-interest is a philosophy in ethics which states that persons who act to further the interests of others (or the interests of the group or groups to which they belong) ultimately serve their own self-interest.
It has often been simply expressed by the belief that an individual, group, or even a commercial entity will "do well by doing good". More from Wikipedia

There's a broader lesson here.

MARK CARNEY TOLD TRUMP TO "GO F
🍁
CK YOURSELF" (POLITELY). AGAIN!

Carney won’t pay ransom for illegal tariffs—and he’s building a country that never needs permission from Washington again.
By: Dean Blundell
Aug 22, 2025
- - -
Yesterday’s (Aug 21st) Carney–Trump phone call was the whole point of electing Mark Carney: no ransom, no photo-op, no performative “deal.”
Ottawa’s readout was deliberately dry—“productive and wide-ranging,” reconvene “shortly”—because the substance was simple: Canada will not pay for relief from a tariff scheme already collapsing in U.S. courts, and we will not be extorted into a side-payment dressed up as diplomacy.

Call it Canada’s GFY bubble: we don’t match tantrums; we build buffers.

WHAT ACTUALLY HAPPENED ON THE CALL, ACCORDING TO MY SOURCES (AND WHAT DIDN'T)

• Trump begged for a headline “deal.” The ask, pitched as pragmatism, was a one-time payment to the United States in exchange for dialing down blanket tariffs—plus other “concessions” Ottawa could wave around at home. That’s not negotiation; that’s protection money.

• The White House didn’t want this call public. They wanted a quiet squeeze, then a loud victory lap. Instead, they got a short Canadian readout and a token ....
