It's a familiar debate. The name of the holiday is "Christ"mas, not "Santa"mas. BUT !
It's jovial injection-molded plastic Santa (made in China) that welcomes us to the local shopping mall.
Sensible.
We haven't abandoned the nativity scene.

What does Christmas mean in our new millennium? Merely a continuation of the pagan rituals that inspired it?
For this Yule season I’d like to tackle where the symbolism of Santa originates and the possible Pagan origins behind his appearance. The name Santa Claus has its roots in the informal Dutch name for St. Nicholas, Sinterklaas. Sinterklaas was a historic 4th-century Greek saint.

Even those skeptical about the Holy Trinity can benefit from understanding idealized imagery of the divine. We needn't harbor expectation of achieving divine perfection to benefit from striving toward it.

It's not difficult to recognize religious proselytizing, after being exposed to it for half a century.
But we forfeit our objectivity if we overlook #16 is rather more counter-proselytizing than neutral clarification.
We can observe each Winter solstice, AND acknowledge the cults the Holy Bible has inspired, without sacrificing our first-born on the altar of lunacy.
