What a way to commemorate Veterans Day. Even if there was a logical reason for this meeting Nov 11th was not the day to hold it

What a terrible action for the Commander-in-Chief on Veterans Day no less. Talk about being tone deaf and clueless about the reaction hosting this man would illicit makes one think 47 really doesn’t care or even know the actual responsibilities attendant to his position! One can assume those who served in the Middle East wars are particularly offended!

President Trump’s Veterans Day meeting with Ahmed al-Sharaa in the Oval Office has sparked fury across the country, especially among veterans and their families. Al-Sharaa is widely recognized as a former senior figure in al-Qaeda, he has a history stained by real atrocities. Under his leadership, al-Nusra Front and Jabhat Fateh al-Sham carried out suicide bombings, sectarian massacres, and ethnic cleansing campaigns targeting Syria’s Christian, Alawite, Shia, and Druze minorities. Seeing him welcomed into the seat of American power on a day meant to honor those same fallen soldiers felt like a slap in the face to many who served.

The irony hasn’t gone unnoticed. Just a few weeks ago, Republican leaders were quick to smear New York state assemblyman Zohran Mamdani, a progressive lawmaker of Palestinian descent, as a supposed “terrorist sympathizer” despite no evidence or connection to extremism. Now, those same voices are silent as the president welcomes an actual architect of terror into the Oval Office. The contrast is stunning and infuriating to those who see the hypocrisy for what it is.

Veterans and their advocates are questioning how anyone could justify such a meeting. With no explanation offered by the White House, the event stands as a jarring reminder of misplaced priorities and moral confusion. For many Americans, this Veterans Day will now be remembered not for unity and remembrance, but for a grim display of disregard. The whole thing sounds about right for a guy who called our fallen soldiers “suckers and losers.”

Have to add that even if there was a logical reason for this meeting (other than another photo op for the guy who's pandering for a Nobel) holding it on Veterans Day sends a message and it's not one that is well received by veterans (or anyone who cares about them). Of course, coming from the guy who said that the clubs in NY were his personal Vietnam (see his statement in the quotes thread) what can you expect.

Such meeting may seem implausible, and therefore possible partisan anti-Trump propaganda. BUT !
The meeting is corroborated here https://www.pbs.org/newshour/show/a...ouse-as-syria-seeks-closer-ties-with-the-west
and elsewhere.

In support of Trump's critics, such meeting, on the federally recognized holiday November 11, is at best tone deaf.
In support of Trump, we needn't negotiate peace with our friends, our allies.

Prime Minister Neville Chamberlain didn't chum up with Adolf Hitler because they were such tight, hard-drinkin' golf buddies.
Chamberlain seems to have hoped to prevent World War II.
"Peace for our time" British Prime Minister Neville Chamberlain in his 30 September 1938 remarks, after meeting Hitler
It didn't work.
And it seems unlikely Trump's meeting with al Sharaa yesterday has not terminated terrorism and mass murder.

Also worth noting:
President Trump continues to demonstrate a fondness for "strong-man" dictators, including Russia's Vlad Putin, and North Korea's Kim Jong Un.

Edited to add additional BBC corroboration of the oval office meeting.

From BBC:
Syria will join the international coalition to combat the Islamic State group, marking a shift in US foreign policy in the Middle East, a senior Trump administration official has confirmed.
The announcement came as President Donald Trump met Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa at the White House - the first such visit from a Syrian leader in the country's history.
In an interview with Special Report on Fox News, al-Sharaa said the visit was part of a "new era" in which the country would co-operate with the US.
Trump has expressed his support for al-Sharaa, who until recently was designated a terrorist by the US government.

Syria will now be the 90th country to join the global coalition, which is aimed at eliminating remaining elements of the so-called Islamic State and stemming the flow of foreign militants to the Middle East.
Following the meeting, a senior administration official also confirmed that the US Treasury Department, along with the departments of state and commerce, will announce new measures to lift economic restrictions on Syria and provide "compliance clarity for investors".

It seems risky Mr. President, but perhaps worth a try, if research and intelligence review in preparation for the meeting indicated realistic prospect for success.
