U.S. Federal Government "Shut Down": 2nd Trump Administration - Shut Down #1 ?

The Republican Party has leadership control of the house, the senate, and the exec. BUT !
This leadership is not absolute. To avoid a U.S. federal shut-down the Republican controlled senate would need a few Democrat votes.
As the shutdown avoidance deadline loomed President Trump [R-NY/FL] announced cancellation of bipartisan negotiations to keep the federal government funded.

This episodic federal funding crisis is unique to the U.S.
The notion of a federal spending limit was promoted as a means to restrain runaway U.S. federal spending: $37,469,695,592,279
The national debt ($37.47 T) is the total amount of outstanding borrowing by the U.S. Federal Government accumulated over the nation’s history.

It doesn't work. BUT !
Rather than dispensing with this unworkable scheme, this self-victimizing bipartisan periodic crisis continues, soon to manifest again.

Does it matter which party is blamed?
Does it matter that generally these self-inflicted disruptions reportedly end up increasing costs, rather than saving?

Thanks for the meme S2 #2. I recall Trump asserting that. *
In an interview that aired Sunday on NBC’s “Meet the Press,” [Senate Majority Leader] Thune, R-S.D., said it’s “totally up to the Democrats” whether a shutdown will be avoided. He vowed that there won’t be any negotiations on a stopgap bill, likening Democrats to hostage-takers who are “hijacking” the process to pursue ideological demands.

Thune [R] attempting damage control before he shuts it down? He is both in title and in fact "Leader". So he blames the minority? Some "leader"!

So:
anyone care to guess how long the Republicans will maintain this shutdown?

* Accomplished conservative debater William F. Buckley Jr. said, give your opponent enough rope, and he'll hang himself with it. Mushroom jokes aside, it appears Trump is well hung here.

Congressional leaders leave White House meeting without deal to avoid government shutdown

STEPHEN GROVES and MARY CLARE JALONICK / Mon, September 29, 2025 at 12:02 AM EDT
WASHINGTON (AP) — A government shutdown fast approaching, Democratic and Republican congressional leaders left a White House meeting with President Donald Trump Monday afternoon showing little willingness to compromise from their entrenched positions in order to avoid a lapse in funding.
If government funding legislation isn't passed by Congress and signed by Donald Trump on Tuesday night, many government offices across the nation will be temporarily shuttered and nonexempt federal employees will be furloughed, adding to the strain on workers and the nation's economy.
But lawmakers were locked in an impasse Monday as Democrats demanded legislation to extend health care benefits and Republicans dared them to vote against legislation that would keep government funding mostly at current levels.
“There are still large differences between us,” Senate Democratic leader Chuck Schumer said as he left the White House.

Common sense tells us funding Obamacare costs $money.
What may be counter-intuitive, failing to fund Obamacare may actually cost taxpayers $money.

How is that possible?
It's reportedly illegal for a hospital to turn away a patient that needs treatment.
The result is many uninsured patients get their healthcare "for free", meaning you and I pay for it, when they show up at a hospital for treatment.

Turns out including such patients into the system is more cost efficient, reportedly lowering those healthcare costs. Yet Republicans still oppose it?

So what?
It is, after all, the responsibility of the expert to operate the familiar and that of the leader to transcend it. Henry Kissinger
These occasional U.S. federal $funding crises are self-inflicted. They occur because congress says so.
And the Republicans control congress.
And President Trump controls the Republicans.

President Trump could alleviate the current government funding crisis by eliminating the U.S. federal debt limit.

The U.S. federal debt limit may have originally been adopted with best of intentions, an attempt to contain unbridled U.S. federal runaway spending. $37,852,655,815,448

- It didn't work.
- It isn't working.
- It isn't gunna.

Trump could not only terminate the current "appropriations" "lapse", but also subsequent lapses for the foreseeable future.
Heroic, if Trump would actually do it.

But for whatever Trump deficiency, cranial, spinal, or basic human compassion, do not expect such leadership innovation from President Trump.

While speaking with the press on Wednesday, [speaker] Johnson [R] laid blame for the eight-days-and-counting shutdown at the feet of Schumer.

The U.S. federal legislature has partially shut down its own federal government, apparently indefinitely.

Some believe the word "anarchy" means chaos, violent rioting, mayhem.
Anarchy means absence of political authority.

For generations, until the new millennium political conservatives including members of the Republican party have promoted smaller, less intrusive, less authoritarian government.
What has the Republican party under the leadership of President Trump brought us?

- U.S. military troops in major U.S. cities.
- Sweeping deportations, including injustices such as: Kilmar Armando Ábrego García, a Salvadoran man living in the United States, was illegally deported on March 15, 2025, by the US government under the Trump administration, which called it "an administrative error".
- U.S. trade war with the world. “the chief business of the American people is business.” President ("silent Cal") Coolidge, campaign slogan “Keep Cool With Coolidge”

Whether the GOP has actually turned anarchist may not yet be certain.
Trump claims credit for bringing peace to the Middle East. What a pity our president doesn't apply that same leadership talent at our own capitol in Washington DC.

‘Wow!’ Trump Advisor Surprises Fox Host By Threatening Democrats With ‘Extreme Measures’ If Gov Doesn’t Reopen

Mediaite / Sat, October 18, 2025 at 9:57 AM GMT-5
Director of the National Economic Council Kevin Hassett surprised Fox News’ Kayleigh McEnany on Saturday by threatening Democrats with “extreme measures” if the current government shutdown does not end in a matter of days. ...
Hassett explained Trump could pick Democrats “favorite” programs and simply end them forever.

Integrated into our system of "checks & balances" within our 3 branch federal government, it is congress that has the authority to terminate a federal program established by congress.
