Many atheists & agnostics criticize long-tenured religions based on implausible detail: a talking serpent, a pregnant virgin, etc.

Independent of the manifold implausibilities of organized religions, there seem to be compensatory benefits. An obvious example, a nurtured, cultivated spiritual connection.
Some have tried to compromise, "cafeteria Catholics" for example. This may involve rejecting Church policy on homosexuals, yet still participating in Church activities including Sunday sermons, and holy communion.
Is there a practical way for those without resolute religious conviction to receive the benefits of spiritual connection, without the hypocrisy of accepting implausible premises for supernatural religions?
