US Republican hardliners heap pressure on McCarthy despite impeachment push

House Speaker Kevin McCarthy faces pressure from right-wing lawmakers over impeachment, looming government shutdown.

US House Speaker Kevin McCarthy faces continued pressure from far-right members of his own Republican Party, despite announcing the impeachment inquiry into President Joe Biden that many of them wanted.
McCarthy will confront a fractured caucus on Wednesday, a day after he said he would direct House committees to open a formal impeachment inquiry into “allegations of abuse of power, obstruction and corruption” around the Biden family.

In the previous millennium the cliche' was: Democrats fall in love, Republicans fall in line.

But in the Trump era, disarray pervades the GOP, stifling DC in general.
Representative McCarthy had no establishment majority to turn to, to champion their cause. And so instead McCarthy weakened himself trying to please the chaotic GOP House caucus.
That turkey has come home to roost.

Republicans claim Trump is being politically persecuted by a partisan justice department. False.
Then Republicans persecute President Biden, apparently for partisan reason.

Speaker reportedly resisted this "impeachment inquiry", but lacks the political power to resist the MAGA aggressors.

Are we on the precipice of explosive discovery about extensive corruption in the Biden white house? Possible,
but unlikely.
What such "inquiry" may help to accomplish is to diminish the dominance the negative Trump news clogging our news feeds, of the most indicted U.S. president in history.

Former House Speaker Kevin McCarthy Announces His Resignation After Nearly 17 Years in Congress

Virginia Chamlee / Wed, December 6, 2023 at 11:36 AM EST
The California congressman — whose tumultuous time at the helm of the House GOP ended in an unprecedented recall vote — announced his impending retirement from the House in an op-ed on Wednesday

Republican Rep. Kevin McCarthy announced on Wednesday that he will be resigning from Congress at the end of the year, just two months after being ousted as House speaker in an unprecedented rebuke from members of his own party.

In an essay for the Wall Street Journal revealing his decision to retire after nearly 17 years in the House, McCarthy suggested that even after he leaves, he will continue his efforts to help recruit new candidates for office. "The Republican Party is expanding every day," he wrote, "and I am committed to lending my experience to support the next generation of leaders."

The longtime California lawmaker, who spent nine months as the nation's third-highest-ranked government official, then seemingly slighted the U.S. political system, writing, "It often seems that the more Washington does, the worse America gets."
