its strange the things you stumble across on the internet.
Today I came across this (dont ask!!!)

1974 Americans bought 208,500 000 bras
in 1975 Americans bought 183,540 000 bras
in 1976 Americans bought 202,728 000 bras

So why did sales of bras fall by about 12% in 1975 and why did sales not fully bounce back (sorry) in 1976?

this is nearly as perplexing (again dont ask)

why did the ass fall out of girdle sales in 1968 any one looking at the trend between 1960 and 1968 could not have seen that coming!

Example:
If blue brassieres were popular until red became available, there might have been a surge in purchases, but not much increase in %population wearing them.
If not color, something else?

Not sure about the garter belt deal, though invention / proliferation of pantyhose may have affected both garter belt, and stocking sales.

And to be even more crude:
might proliferation of cheap food have increased bra cup size? How many primordial forest dwelling proto-humans could fill a double D bra? I'm guessing we're not getting the full picture here. And in this particular case, I hope to keep it that way.
