The war in Iran (or whose war is it anyways?)

"Why else is he so determined to prevent people from voting in the mid-terms?" S2 #121
Indeed.
Ideologically it's tantamount to a confession.
Republicans know, and have tacitly admitted, their objectives and principles will not / can not win in open and honest competition against Democrat objectives, principles, and prior accomplishments.

So Republicans lie: no foreign wars, low consumer prices
Republicans cheat, pack our law courts. They wouldn't have reversed Roe otherwise.

What continues to astound and baffle me, not only is a significant% of the electorate aware of this, they approve it.

BREAKING: HOORAY! The downed airman in Iran has been RESCUED…but at huge cost!

The epic saga of the downed F-15 weapons systems operator has ended in success, as the US military pulled off a complex and very dangerous rescue mission behind enemy lines.

While it’s unclear what happened, it appears that the first set of rescue craft either got “stuck in the mud” and destroyed by the US to avoid them falling into enemy hands (according to the Trump admin) or were shot down (according to the Iranians) and a second set of aircraft had to be deployed to get everybody out.

The airman is in critical condition and several other servicemembers were injured. Two C-130 planes and two helicopters were lost in the operation, which Trump is now billing as a huge success.

Chris Gordon, a reporter for Air and Space Forces Magazine, reports that Reaper drones patrolled the area and were striking “military-aged males” who were “believed to be a threat,” meaning they just flew around indiscriminately killing everyone in the area.

While we are beyond thankful our brave servicemember was rescued safely, the inconvenient truth is that none of this needed to happen.

We didn’t need to lose multiple aircraft, sustain injuries to our servicemembers, or piss millions of dollars down the drain because this war didn’t need to happen and only broke out because Donald Trump attacked Iran while pretending to negotiate in a despicable show of cowardice.

This is no victory. We can only hope that the “success” of this mission doesn’t encourage Trump to go forward with his insane plan to send our troops into harm’s way to steal Iran’s uranium.

The Strait of Hormuz is reopening, but not for everyone.

Abbas Araghchi said the strait remains open, except for ships from the United States and Israel, while vessels from other countries can still pass through.

In recent days, ships associated with France, Japan, and India have crossed successfully, including a French cargo vessel and oil tankers from Japan and India, signaling a selective reopening under Iran’s terms.

Tehran’s message is clear: this is not a full shutdown, but a targeted restriction aimed at specific countries, while the rest of the world continues to use this vital trade route.

With roughly 20% of global oil moving through this passage, access to it is now playing a major role in both the conflict and the global economy.

But a question - how long will it be before Donnie decides this is unacceptable and manages to block the Strait while blaming it on Iran?

It may not rise to the level of a news flash. But it's an important historic detail the consequences of which may bedevil the world for the foreseeable future:

President Trump has lost his War in Iran. Trump may continue to wage it for as much longer as he has U.S. military command.
Trump's best shot at this ill-timed War was a hearts & minds victory, with a much lower budget, much more effective cooperation with Iran's native opponents of the Ayatollah's regime.
We've succeeded before, ousting Iran's duly elected Mossadegh.

Trump's cascade of blunders is gaining momentum. Some indications more vivid than others.

Hegseth’s ‘paranoia’ of being replaced explains purge of top general — as ally emerges for Army secretary’s role

By Steven Nelson Published April 3, 2026, 4:33 p.m. ET
WASHINGTON — Secretary of War Pete Hegseth on Thursday demanded the resignation of Army Chief of Staff Gen. Randy George — Driscoll’s top aide — in the middle of the Iran war for reasons that were not publicly stated.
“This is all driven by the insecurity and paranoia that Pete has developed since Signalgate. Unfortunately, it is stoked by some of his closest aides who should be trying to calm the waters,” an official said, referring to Hegseth’s March 2025 group chat with national security officials that inadvertently included a reporter.

Dumping, forfeiting this much competence in hope of increasing loyalty is a very bad idea in a $Billion $Dollar a day War.
Compounding this, not only are we blowing up our own C-130's. Trump's war crimes list is growing.
And as expensive as Trump's War already is, if the U.S. is held liable for war reparations, we may add $Trillions to the U.S. $federal $debt before President Vance is inaugurated.

A TIMELINE OF TRUMP "DEFEATING" IRAN:

Mar 3: "We won the war."
Mar 7: "We defeated Iran."
Mar 9: "We must attack Iran."
Mar 9: "The war is ending almost completely, and very beautifully."
Mar 11: “You never like to say too early you won. We won. In the first hour it was over.” Mar 12: "We did win, but we haven't won completely yet."
Mar 13: "We won the war."
Mar 14: "Please help us."
Mar 15: "If you don't help us, I will certainly remember it."
Mar 16: "Actually, we don't need any help at all."
Mar 16: "I was just testing to see who's listening to me."
Mar 16: "If NATO doesn't help, they will suffer something very bad."
Mar 17: "We neither need nor want NATO's help."
Mar 17: "I don't need Congressional approval to withdraw from NATO."
Mar 18: "Our allies must cooperate in reopening the Strait of Hormuz."
Mar 19: "US allies need to get a grip - step up and help open the Strait of Hormuz."
Mar 20: "NATO are cowards."
Mar 21: "The Strait of Hormuz must be protected by the countries that use it. We don't use it, we don't need to open it."
Mar 22: "This is the last time. I will give Iran 48 hours. Open the strait"
Mar 22: "Iran is Dead"
Mar 23: "We had very good and productive talks with Iran."
Mar 24: "We’re making progress."
Mar 25: “They gave us a present and the present arrived today. And it was a very big present worth a tremendous amount of money. I’m not going to tell you what that present is, but it was a very significant prize.”
Mar 26: "Make a deal, or we’ll just keep blowing them away."
Mar 27: "We don’t have to be there for NATO."
Mar 28: No major quote
Mar 29: Claimed talks were progressing
Mar 30: "Open the Strait of Hormuz immediately, or face devastating consequences."
Mar 31: Claimed a deal was "very close" and that Iran would "do the right thing"
Apr 1: "We’ll see what happens very soon."
Apr 2: Repeated that a deal was likely, while warning of continued strikes if not
Apr 3: "Something big is going to happen."
Apr 4: Said Iran must comply "immediately" or face further consequences.
Apr 5: "Open the f*ckin' Strait, you crazy bastards, or you'll be living in Hell - JUST WATCH! Praise be to Allah."

This man is off his rocker. Being an American these days is like being in the backseat of a car driven by a drunk driver; all we can do is watch in horror and hope an authority figure steps in to arrest the man responsible.

"Ronald Reagan yanked the solar panels off the White House." newman #131
For many years Reagan was the Republican demigod.
Paying the expense not merely to remove the solar panels, but to substitute an inferior substitute was insulting to Carter, and contemptuous / ignorant.
And the U.S. electorate continued to vote Republican.

For the record, and to promote clarity:
It's not clear whether this substantial commitment to retrieve our wounded warrior was at Trump's insistence, or without it.

Probe to snare Iran rescue leaker 'underway' as Trump threatens jail for imperiling arduous operation

Trump says leak put the missing airman and hundreds of rescuers at 'great risk' during search mission

By Elaine Mallon Fox News / Published April 7, 2026 9:06am EDT

Consider the above FOX News headline in the context of President Trump's own record.

The contents of these boxes are only part of the classified documents theft Trump perpetrated before departing the white house before President Biden's administration.

So what is the outrage President Trump?
Jeopardizing one of our U.S. military combat troops? Or your political façade?

For Iranians eager for change, Trump's latest words turn hope into terror

The president's extreme statements leave many in the country dreading the future instead of hoping the war will help produce a fair society.

DJ,
It seems you could use a lesson on how to be a man, from a woman.

So what next Mr. President, after you bomb them back to the stone "ages"?

"Vigilantes"?
The above still image capture is from broadcast news intro. showing a U.S. navy jet fighter being catapulted from an aircraft carrier.

Writing on U.S. aerial munitions isn't new.

But in WWII it seems to have been conducted at direct combatant level, not at command level.

There's a message here. Anyone care to decipher it?

vig·i·lan·te (vĭj′ə-lăntē)
n.
A person who is not a member of law enforcement but who pursues and punishes persons suspected of lawbreaking.
[Spanish, watchman, vigilante, from Latin vigilāns, vigilant-, present participle of vigilāre, to be watchful, from vigil, watchful; see weg- in the Appendix of Indo-European roots.]

Trump is a buffoon.
The Middle East broadly, and Iran specifically know it.
TACO Trump tried to bluff the Hormuz Strait open, offering arbitrary deadlines and dire consequences experts characterized as "war crimes". Then Trump caved.
That doesn't even begin to address Iran's war reparations issues.

It is revealing that Pakistan serves as the metaphorical adult in the room, providing Trump an ostensible face-saving way to back down from his apocalyptic "stone ages" exaggerations.
Meanwhile Trump's pretense of America's heroic rescue of the Iranian People from their tyrannical rulers appears to have worn through on the streets of Tehran.

Trump's own countrymen can not believe him, one broken promise after another, after another. Sadly, Iranians have gotten the message 2020 voters remembered, and 2024 voters forgot.

The nations doing deals with Iran to get ships through Strait of Hormuz

A growing number of countries are bypassing maritime law and gaining safe passage for their tankers via direct diplomacy with Iran

Tehran’s $500bn ‘tollbooth’ would change shape of Middle East forever

Charging tankers to use Strait of Hormuz would enrich Iran and affect maritime trade around the world

'Tehran tollbooth' could be worth $500bn as Strait of Hormuz fees hold key to peace talks

An illegal system of transit payments could be formalised in peace deal

And to think that none of this would be happening if Trump hadn't decided to attack Iran.

"$2 $million toll per tanker" #137
Trump has himself between Iran, and a hard place.
a) Who will pay this $2 $M / tanker toll? The U.S. taxpayer? Why? Trump himself announced we don't need that oil, we've got our own. So Trump wants U.S. to subsidize the rest of the planet's oil markets? $Millions per boat?!
b) King Trump may wish to pretend he could do this if he wants. BUT ! Congress controls the purse strings. And both houses of congress are controlled by Republicans. And Republicans have already suffered enough in off-year elections, with another election arriving this November. Has Trump stomped his Johnson?

The cliché is every grey cloud has a Silver lining.
Apart from the specter of the U.S. heavily subsidizing the planet's oil market for the benefit of Iran notorious as an exporter of terrorism, Trump has tossed his scorchin' hot political potato to congress' Johnson [R] & Thune [R].
They can choose to support Trump, or not.
Which of those options will harm them less politically in the next election?

Congratulations Mr. President. With unprecedented skill you have managed to concoct costly defeat from the jaws of a non-issue. And it only cost U.S. a $Billion $Dollars a day.
Carter / Reagan
