The thing about tariffs in general is that they harm buyers and sellers both, so are inherently illegal unless justified by some defensive need.
And since Canada is not using slave labor or anything wrong, it makes no sense.

The English language is malleable, subject to being used in metaphor, & hyperbole.

This substantially complicates communication for those that accurately describe extremes. For those accurate descriptions may easily be mistaken for rhetorical flourish, metaphor, hyperbole, or both.

Trump threatening to render the sovereign nation of Canada a 51st State is entirely inappropriate.
Trump choosing to wage trade war against Canada is no better.

It is disgraceful that the U.S. has chosen this boor as its leader.
Failing to provide adequate restraint compounds the harm.

Australian definition of a Canadian...

Once in a while someone does a nice job of describing a Canadian, this time it was an Australian dentist.

You probably missed it in the local news, but there was a report that someone in Pakistan had advertised in a newspaper an offer of a reward to anyone who killed a Canadian - any Canadian.

An Australian dentist wrote the following editorial to help define what a Canadian is, so they would know one when they found one.

So the following is an Australian Definition of a Canadian. In case anyone asks you who a Canadian is ??

A Canadian can be English, or French, or Italian, Irish, German, Spanish, Polish, Russian or Greek.

A Canadian can be Mexican, African, Indian, Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Australian, Iranian, Asian, Arab, Pakistani or Afghan.

A Canadian may also be a Cree, Metis, Mohawk, Blackfoot, Sioux, or one of the many other tribes known as native Canadians.

A Canadian's religious beliefs range from Christian, Jewish, Buddhist, Muslim, Hindu or none. In fact, there are more Muslims in Canada than in Afghanistan.

The key difference is that in Canada they are free to worship as each of them chooses. Whether they have a religion or no religion, each Canadian ultimately answers only to God, not to the government, or to armed thugs claiming to speak for the government and for God.

A Canadian lives in one of the most prosperous lands in the history of the world. The root of that prosperity can be found in the Charter of Rights and Freedoms which recognize the right of each person to the pursuit of happiness.

A Canadian is generous and Canadians have helped out just about every other nation in the world in their time of need, never asking a thing in return.

Canadians welcome the best of everything, the best products, the best books, the best music, the best food, the best services and the best minds.

But they also welcome the least - the oppressed, the outcast and the rejected. These are the people who built Canada.

You can try to kill a Canadian if you must as other blood-thirsty tyrants in the world have tried but in doing so you could just be killing a relative or a neighbour. This is because Canadians are not a particular people from a particular place.

They are the embodiment of the human spirit of freedom. Everyone who holds to that spirit, everywhere, can be a Canadian.

Please keep this going !!

BREAKING: HISTORY UNFOLDS! Mark Carney takes the stage in front of the European Union and welcomes their invitation to become an associate member of the organization — powerfully rebuking Trump.

The world just shifted beneath our feet...

"Yesterday, President von der Leyen spoke of moving beyond the [Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement] to an alliance for the future, opening the door to Canada to become the European Union's first associate member," Carney said in Brussels.

"Canada welcomes this ambition," he declared, delivering four simple words that will be etched into the history books.

The era of America and Canada being the closest allies in the world is over. Canada now looks across the Atlantic Ocean for its future.

"I will tell you polling shows that an overwhelming majority of Canadians support much closer ties with Europe," Carney continued. "An alliance for the future is a unique, positive approach that we will define together, building on our common strengths and based on our shared values. But let me take this opportunity to say plainly what Canada proposes..."

"Canada and Europe should secure our strategic autonomy through deep cooperation in the full range of strategic capabilities, including critical minerals, defense industrial capacity, AI and compute, energy security, space and payment," he said listing off the sectors that experts have been predicting would be the crux of this arrangement. "We should move towards seamless digital trade and non-agricultural goods in a wide range of services. We should deepen our people-to-people ties, allowing our youth to work, study and live where they want on either side of the Atlantic."

That final point is a geopolitical earthquake. Free movement of workers is one of the defining, most powerful rights afforded to EU members and allowing Canada to partake in anything close to that means that "associate membership" is just a hair's breadth away from full-fledged membership.

"Canada can contribute LNG and hydrogen at large scale to support Europe's energy security including by developing and leveraging new port infrastructure in the high north and on our east coast," said Carney.

"We are not fair-weather allies. We do not pursue zero-sum deals. Our commitment to the rule of law, and our unyielding defense of human dignity, individual freedom, and democracy share the same deep roots, the same unwavering dedication," he added, taking oblique shots at Trump.

Under this White House, America has become far worse than a fair-weather ally. We're no ally at all, as this new trade war against Canada demonstrates. We're utterly unreliable, unstable, and captive to the whims of an erratic, cognitively declining pedophile. The rule of law is in tatters with a Justice Department that is actively covering up the Epstein files and ignoring Trump's rampant corruption. We are waging an illegal pointless war overseas that proves this administration has zero respect for human life or dignity.

The rest of the world looks at our country's impulsive thrashing under Trump and sees a failing state that should be treated like the plague — avoided wherever and whenever possible. Thanks to Carney's visionary leadership, Canada is refusing to let itself be drawn into America's self-destructive death spiral.

He's forming new relationships and alliances to meet the coming century.

"Europe and Canada are each strong. Europe and Canada are even stronger together," said Carney.

Not surprisingly, Trump has already proven incapable of meeting this moment. Rather than reassessing his belligerent posture towards our northern neighbor and mending the relationship, he's threatening “serious tariffs” on the EU if they integrate Canada in a way he finds displeasing. This man has no solutions, no ideas, and no other instinct beyond lashing out.

The world is leaving us behind and we have Trump to blame.

Canada is not becoming a member of the European Union. The term associate member is something new to describe Canada‘s partnership with the EU, as far as trade goes. We are not giving up our sovereignty to become a member. With all this being said, it’s obvious Trump is feeling the isolation and is outwardly expressing his jealousy and frustration. Trump tries to bully countries into submission and then gets revengeful when they don’t bend to his wishes. Canada is not sitting around while America and the Trump administration wages war on their closest allies. This is what a New World Order made up of middle powers looks like. This is what diversification looks like. This is what isolation looks like. This is why we elected PMMC. Let Rome crumble under Trump.

Trump just spoke to reporters outside Air Force One saying, “I think it’s laughable, look ah, the whole thing with Canada, Canada has been a terrible trade partner and ah, no I don’t see that. If they do that, and I think it’s all a hostile act, I will put very serious tariffs or stop trading with Europe, on many things. So if they do that - if Europe does that with a bad if intention - if it’s a good intention that’s fine - if it’s a bad intention we’ll put very heavy tariffs on Europe, which is a possibility.” These were his words verbatim.

All three do illegal economic sanctions on people they simply want to harm, but had broken no law.
Like Iran and Russia.
To be legal, economic sanctions need a judicial due process.

The room lost it when Carney began the imitation.

The reporters laughed. That only egged him on.

Carney had earned the moment.

His government is backing a vast partnership among Canada, Québec, Newfoundland and Labrador, Hydro Québec, Newfoundland and Labrador Hydro, and the Innu Nation. The projects will connect hydroelectric power, onshore wind, transmission lines, mines, railways, and ports. They represent approximately $70 billion in investment, more than 23,000 construction jobs, and an estimated $31 billion added to Canada’s economy by the early 2040s.

Carney: “Because yes, we love these windswept lands.”

How about down south?

Well, that other government is defunding clean energy programs apart and increasing investment back toward depleting fossil fuels.

Meanwhile, Carney is preparing Canada to invest in homes, vehicles, mines, mills, and factories with renewable electricity.

Carney: “Mastering energy means mastering our destiny.”

And he said it all with a smile. Well done.

It may seem obvious to observe President Donald J. Trump has made the United States of America the laughing stock of the solar system.
It's not merely a global snicker for a fashion faux pas, belt / shoes mismatch. The dynamic duo Netanyahu / Trump have driven up diesel fuel prices globally, causing inflation,
signaling hardships ahead as the Winter heating season approaches.

Carney leads his nation for benefit of the People.

Peel this fashion onion back to germination, it's based on the jape against a woman whose shoes don't match her handbag.

I suppose we should be relieved. Ten millennia ago most humans were preoccupied with where their next meal would come from.
In the 3rd millennium, in the post-Beefaroni era our quibble can be far more trivial.
Scorn can be used as a social tool to lift oneself up by putting others down.

That's progress.
